Deaf Jax couple gets marriage license; Deaf theatergoer humiliated

Here are two Deaf News Briefs.

The first is a report from News4Jax that the deaf couple who filed a lawsuit against a county courthouse in Jacksonville, Florida alleging discrimination after they were refused a marriage license because they didn’t bring their own interpreter now has a marriage license.

The couple’s names are Joel Alfaro and Yusela Machado Silvente. Their attorney John Phillips tweeted an image of the couple displaying their license with a caption that said, “It’s officially official. License issued. Thanks to the @CityofJax for working through this.”

News4Jax said the attorney confirmed that the lawsuit against the courthouse would be dismissed.

The second Deaf News is about a hard-of-hearing woman who said she was humiliated while watching a Broadway show in New York City after an actress mistakenly called her out for recording the show with her smartphone while she was in fact reading captions using a device provided by the venue.

The woman’s name is Samantha Coleman. She used her voice to explain what happened in an Instagram video. The show she was watching is called Hadestown. She said she was really hurt to be “publicly ridiculed” and now she is fearful of using a captioning device during a future performance.

Hadestown responded on Twitter to say they’ve contacted Coleman in private to apologize. The show said they would review to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today.
