Nashville school shooting kills 3 students, 3 adults

There was a shooting at a private Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee this morning that killed three children and three adults.

The suspected shooter, who is a 28-year-old female, had two assault-type rifles and a handgun with her. Police officers who arrived at the school after an emergency call found the suspect actively shooting on the second floor and shot and killed her.

None of the victims have been identified. Police previously said the shooter appeared to be a teenager, but later updated that to say she is 28 years old. Police said they are working to figure out what connection the shooter has with the school.

The school’s name is The Covenant School and it serves about 200 students from preschool to sixth grade.

Tornadoes kill 25 in Mississippi

On Friday night, at least 25 people in Mississippi were killed by tornadoes that hit several communities. About 2,000 homes were damaged or destroyed in Carroll, Humphreys, Monroe, and Sharkey counties. News footage shows that there is destruction and debris spread across entire neighborhoods.

One man in Alabama was killed when a tornado flipped his mobile home. Tornadoes also hit parts of Georgia. Two tigers at the Wild Animal Safari escaped their enclosure but they were found, tranquilized, and secure.

President Biden issued an emergency declaration for Mississippi, which makes federal funds available in the recovery process.

Chocolate factory explosion kills 7

On Friday afternoon there was a huge explosion at a chocolate factory in West Reading, Pennsylvania. At least seven people died in the blast. The factory’s name is R.M. Palmer and it employs over 800 people. Here is a video of the blast, which is captured by a news weather camera.

The explosion completely destroyed the chocolate factory and it was so powerful that it damaged nearby buildings, causing some to become condemned, and a nearby apartment building was pushed four feet forward.

There were searches over the weekend for missing people and the searches are over with one person found alive and several bodies recovered.

WGAL News reported that several employees complained about smelling gas, so the explosion could have been due to a natural gas leak. There is an investigation to determine the official cause of the blast.

RM Palmer posted a statement on its website saying it is “devastated by the tragic events,” saying they have lost close friends and colleagues.

[Advertisement from Deaf Law Center]:

Announcing the New York Adult Survivors Act: Many survivors of sexual assault need time to process the hurt they’ve experienced; it might take years or even decades for a survivor to tell someone what happened to them. For years, our laws were out of step with that reality. Because of that, many survivors lost the opportunity to hold the person who hurt them accountable in court. Now, those survivors are getting a fighting chance. The Adult Survivors Act is a New York State law that creates a one-time, one-year look back window for adult sexual assault survivors who are outside the statute of limitations. That means that any adult survivor – no matter when they were assaulted and even if they are outside the statute of limitations – can file a civil case against their abuser or the institution that protected them, through November 24, 2023.

Cuban migrants use hang glider to escape to Florida Keys

Police in Key West, Florida said two Cuban migrants landed a hang glider with a motor on it on the runway of the Key West International Airport on Saturday morning. It is about 90 miles from Cuba to Key West and it is common for Cuban migrants to try and reach the U.S. via boat, but it is unusual to see them use hang gliders.

The two men were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol. The local sheriff’s office released images of the hang glider on the runway with private jets seen in the background.

Massive protests in Israel

There are massive protests in Israel by people who are opposed to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s plans to change Israel’s judiciary.

CNN explained that the prime minister wants to give the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, more control over how judges are selected, what laws the Supreme Court can rule on, and allow them to overturn the Supreme Court’s decisions. Opponents say this could destroy Israel’s democracy.

Over the weekend, Netanyahu fired his defense minister after he spoke out against the changes in the judiciary. That sparked widespread protests that have continued into today. Many parts of everyday life in Israel have been disrupted, from airports to restaurants to banks.

The latest is that Netanyahu announced he would put on hold his planned changes to the judiciary for now.

That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
