Hello, it is Monday, June 21. I’m back in the studio. Thank you to Callie Frye and Renca Dunn for covering the news all of last week. Ready for today’s top stories?
Last night a tornado hit suburban Chicago, causing severe damage to at least 16 homes and damaging many more buildings. Five people were hospitalized.
News videos showed homes with broken windows, overturned vehicles, and downed fences. The hardest-hit area is Naperville, about 25 miles west of Chicago.
On Saturday in southern Alabama, there was a terrible accident involving multiple vehicles on I-65 in which nine children and an adult were killed.
News reports said eight children were in a vehicle from the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch, which provides a home for neglected or abused children. A father and his 9-month-old daughter were in another vehicle and they were killed. So that brings it to 10 people who died.
The roads were wet in the area as a result of rainfall from the remnants of Tropical Storm Claudette, which hit Louisiana that early morning.
Witnesses said multiple vehicles caught on fire and that some survivors were pulled out to safety. There will be an investigation by a NTSB team.
A GoFundMe set up for the girls ranch has raised over $250,000.
On Saturday night during a Pride parade in southern Florida, a driver plowed into a crowd of people, killing one man and injuring two men. It was feared that it was an act of hate, but authorities in Wilton Manors now say it was a tragic accident, not a criminal act.
A driver, a 77-year-old man, was a part of the parade and is said to accidentally accelerate and lose control of his pickup truck. Police said he was not under the influence.
The truck narrowly missed U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was a part of the parade.
