Over 30 killed in winter storm

CNN reported that the massive winter storm that enveloped much of the U.S. the past several days is blamed on at least 37 deaths nationwide.

The hardest-hit area is those in western New York as they have received about three and a half feet of snow.

Some people were found dead in cars and on the street in snowbanks. There were many cars that became stranded. Even ambulances and rescue crews got stranded.

CNN said state police and National Guard troops are now involved in helping to rescue people in New York.

In Ohio, on Saturday morning, four people in two vehicles were killed when a semi-truck crossed the median of a I-75 highway and crashed into them. The weather was bad at that time. The truck driver was okay.

In British Columbia, Canada, four people died when a bus they were in went off an icy road and crashed. Over 50 were hospitalized.

There are still winter storm alerts in place across North America, so stay safe out there.

Migrants dropped near Kamala Harris home

ABC News said three buses full of migrants, including children, from Texas stopped in front of VP Kamala Harris’ official residence in D.C. to drop them off on Christmas Eve during the nighttime. There were about 110 to 130 people on the buses. Temperatures were about 15 degrees F.

There were workers with migrant support organizations that were present to pick up the people and bring them to a local church.

ABC said they reached out to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s office to see if he sent the migrants but he did not confirm. Abbott and other governors are known to send buses full of migrants to DC or other areas to bring attention to issues at the border, which often includes overwhelming numbers of migrants.

The White House said it was a cruel and dangerous stunt to drop migrants off in that way.

Tension in Korean airspace

AP News said there is a serious military situation between North and South Korea. It started when South Korea’s military detected five drones from North Korea crossing the border and violating its airspace. South Korea launched fighter jets and attack helicopters to shoot down the drones. Over 100 rounds were fired but AP said they do not know if the North Korean drones were shot down.

AP said a South Korean military jet crashed during takeoff but that two pilots safely ejected. So clearly, a lot of tension in the Korean Peninsula.

China Covid-19 surge

News reports say there is a huge increase in Covid-19 cases in China after the country stopped enforcing its strict rules and mass lockdowns.

An international health organization estimated that China has over a million infections and 5,000 deaths a day. The true number is unknown because a Chinese health agency has stopped publishing daily Covid-19 data.

News reports said many hospitals across China are overwhelmed and that crematoriums are experiencing high demand.

A major concern for the world is that there could be a new coronavirus mutant emerging from China, especially because there is a large population and limited immunity.
