Through the partnership of NFL and Hudl, the NFL honors one high school player each week during the NFL regular season for showing excellent football techniques. It is voted by the representatives of the NFL Football Operations department. So, Demarico was selected for Week 14, which was last week.

Demarico is a running back and a defensive back for the Sioux City North High School football team. Because of this award that Demarico got, the school will receive a $3,000 equipment grant.

If you recall, last year, we interviewed him because he faced discrimination from another school, South Sioux City High School, related to residency issues. We included a link in this transcript to the interview from last year so you can learn more about him and what happened last year. The case was resolved, but Demarico decided he did not want to stay at South Sioux City High School after what happened to him and moved forward by going to Sioux City North High School and he plays for the football team there.

“Here is a video comment from Demarico!”

Demarico Young: I feel happy and inspired for this recognition by the NFL board who voted for me for that “Way to Play” award. Honestly, I have been through tough times. It is not easy to keep stepping forward, and pushing closer to growing into who I am today. I was supposed to stay at SSC (South Sioux City high school), but my little brother and my mom told me that they would rather for me to transfer to that new school because of their discrimination on Deaf people and many others. I don’t want to have a “no good” life, you know? So, I just went ahead and transferred to that new school in Sioux City North high school. It is a 5A division school. It’s looking good for me so far. My GPA has been 3.8 for this recent 1st semester. My 2nd semester will begin on January 2nd. So, we will see what’s up.

Renca: An inside source that works closely with Demarico mentioned to us that he recently broke a 44-year-old record at his school for the most touchdowns in a season. He is expected to possibly break 3 more school records by next year and Hudl will be covering him. Demarico is someone to keep an eye on for his rising football career.
