McDonald’s franchisees fined over child labor

The U.S. Department of Labor fined three McDonald’s franchisees for allowing hundreds of children, including two 10-year-olds, to work there.

The two 10-year-olds were working at a McDonald’s in Kentucky. They were unpaid and worked as late as 2 a.m. One of the children was allowed to operate a deep fryer, which is supposed only to be operated by those 16 or above.

One of the three franchisees, Bauer Food LLC, said the 10-year-olds were not employed by the restaurant but were a night manager’s kids who visited the workplace.

The investigation said there were 305 minors that were employed among the three franchisees, which run a combined 62 McDonald’s locations in Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland and Ohio.

McDonald’s headquarters said the use of child labor is unacceptable and that they would take action to change this.

Atlanta shooting suspect in custody

The suspected gunman who shot up an Atlanta medical building on Wednesday, killing one and wounding four others, was captured last night. His name is Deion Patterson. He was arrested inside a gated condominium complex about 10 miles north of where the shooting happened.

The woman who died is Amy St. Pierre. She worked for the CDC. The CDC said it is deeply saddened about St. Pierre’s death.

CNN reported that Patterson used to work for the U.S. Coast Guard and was unhappy with the care he was receiving from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Patterson was charged with one count of murder and four counts of aggravated assault.

Man dies after chokehold in NYC subway

In New York City, a 30-year-old man named Jordan Neely died after he was placed in a chokehold by another man in a subway car.

Neely was a homeless man and was known for impersonating Michael Jackson.

News reports said Neely was shouting and pacing on a train, saying that he is fed up with having no food or drink. He shouted that he doesn’t mind going to jail, that he is ready to die. He took off his jacket and whipped it to the floor.

Several passengers restrained him and held him down on the floor, choking him for several minutes. Neely passed out and later died.

The man who choked him is a 24-year-old man who is a Marine Corps veteran. He was questioned by police but released without any charges.

Protesters and activists are demanding there be charges of manslaughter or murder. The Manhattan DA’s office said they are investigating.

Proud Boys leader convicted

A jury in Washington D.C. found Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio guilty of seditious conspiracy for his role in the Jan 6. attack on the Capitol.

Three other Proud Boys leaders were found guilty of conspiring to obstruct the certification of the 2020 election and other related charges.

The jury acquitted them of charges that they assaulted, impeded or resisted officers.

22 snakes found in checked bags at airport

At the Chennai Airport in India, customs agents seized 22 snakes, some of them large snakes, that were found inside checked luggage. Indian officials posted photos and videos of the snakes.

A news report said the traveler is a woman that was traveling from Malaysia.

CBS News said in January, there was another animal-related incident at the Chennai Airport when customs agents found 45 ball pythons and other animals in baggage.

Russia accuses US of drone attack

A spokesperson for Russian President Putin said the U.S. was undoubtedly behind the drone attack that allegedly tried to assassinate Putin. The spokesperson said Ukrainian leaders follow what the U.S. decides.

A U.S. spokesperson said Russia is lying, pure and simple. He said the U.S. has nothing to do with it and they don’t even know exactly what happened.

So this is a significant allegation from Russia.
