18-year-old deaf man charged with killing his baby

Here are two Deaf News briefs.

Local news in Rio Grande Valley, Texas reported that an 18-year-old deaf man named Dalyn Josiah Ramos was arrested with the allegation that he murdered his 16-month-old baby by strangulation.

Ramos was charged with capital murder of a person under 10 years of age.

MyRGV.com said according to a police affidavit, a police officer went to a home in Edinburg last Monday night after getting a report of an unconscious baby. There was an ambulance there and the baby was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police said the baby had injuries on its face that are “consistent with petechiae,” which are round blood spots on the skin that is commonly found in victims of strangulation. Police said Ramos later admitted that he killed the baby.

MyRGV.com reported that Ramos appeared in court last week. It is not clear if he entered a plea. In Texas, a conviction of capital murder of a person under 10 carries a penalty of life imprisonment or the death penalty.

Deaf man killed after being struck by car

A 40-year-old deaf man named George Murray was killed after he was struck by a car in Ballston, New York on April 22. The Times Union reported that a person who is close to Murray believes that he was crossing a street and then suffered a seizure, which caused him to fall and lay on the road, where he was struck by a Honda Civic. Murray was pronounced dead at the scene. The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office told local news that it is investigating. It is not clear if the driver stopped and notified authorities or not.

There are several posts on social media by people expressing grief about Murray’s death. A Facebook group called “In Honor of George Murray” said he was a student at the New York State School for the Deaf for many years.

The Times Union interviewed several people who knew Murray. They said he had a tough upbringing. A man named John Lyng said he took Murray in when he was 19 years old and struggling with life and helped him to get Social Security disability support. Lyng said Murray was just having the best year of his life with a new job and moving into a new apartment and is heartbroken at what happened to him.

A celebration of Murray’s life will take place at Moreau State Park on May 20.
