Mav Murder Trial Day 6 Part 2 Recap
CALLIE FRYE:
The defendant called the third witness, Michael Fucci, to the stand.
He was asked how he knew Mavrick, and he responded that he had seen Mavrick’s vlogs about traveling, his vision for the Deaf community, and a vlog of him with Grant. Michael found himself interested in their vision and reached out to Mavrick and Grant in July 2019, asking to meet.
They later met on August 3rd. Grant and Mavrick were painting his home and cleaning to help him sell the house. After three or four days, Grant wanted to leave. He asked Mavrick to join him, and Mavrick declined and wanted to stay with Michael. Grant then left alone, and Mavrick stayed behind with Michael to help him around, like with gardening. A week later, Grant returned to pick up Mavrick from Fucci’s house on August 17 or 18.
After a while, Mavrick invited Michael to a restaurant, Asian Dragon. Fucci showed up and saw the cut on Mavrick’s hand, and asked what happened. Mavrick shared that it was cut and he escaped the woods by taking Grant’s car. Fucci told Mavrick that he should go see the police. They hadn’t agreed to do it yet, and after the dinner was over Mavrick and Fucci got in the car to follow Lee’s car to go to Lee’s ranch. Because of the traffic, they lost Lee for a while. When they finally found Lee, he signaled to them to pull over and Lee told them that the police were searching for Mavrick. Fucci got out of the car, while Mavrick stayed in the car. Fucci and Lee, along with Lee’s helper on the ranch, discussed it for a while. Lee suggested that it was best to see the police to clear things up, and they agreed.
Fucci and Mavrick used the GPS to find the Lakeport police station. It seemed to be closed, so they drove around the back and could see people inside. Fucci got out of the car and walked in, and Mavrick stayed in the car. Fucci knocked on the door and two police officers, a man and a woman, appeared. Fucci explained that his friend got in a fight with someone in Humboldt County, and asked for advice on what to do. The police said he needed to call the Humboldt police, and Fucci told him he couldn’t do that because he was Deaf. They said he still had to call, so Fucci and Mavrick drove to Lee’s ranch to let him know that the police weren’t able to help them. However, the gates were locked and they couldn’t enter. They tried to get a hold of Lee, but there was no reception.
Fucci and Mavrick realized they had to drive to Fucci’s home, which was a two hour and 45 minute drive. On the drive, they passed Clearlake City. Mavrick kept looking for something, and Fucci asked what he was looking at. Mavrick said he parked the car at Dollar General but there were no cars there. When they were almost home, Mavrick said he spotted Grant’s car and that it was still there at another Dollar General store. Fucci asked Mavrick if he was sure that was Grant’s car. He asked if Mavrick had stabbed Grant back after Grant stabbed him. Was Grant hurt in the woods when Mavrick escaped? Mavrick said that he didn’t stab back and that Grant just escaped into the woods.
Fucci kept driving, and when they arrived home Fucci was worn out and got a message from Grant’s grandmother telling him that Grant was missing. Fucci didn’t communicate this with Mavrick right away, because Mavrick was asleep downstairs, and he went to sleep himself. The next morning, while Fucci was making coffee, Mavrick came upstairs and asked Fucci for the wifi password for his phone. Fucci shared the information. When Mavrick connected his phone to wifi, his phone was bombarded with messages. He went outside, and Fucci didn’t want to follow him outside and be nosy. He wanted to respect his privacy. Mavrick paced back and forth, and Fucci’s mom called the Humboldt police. Fucci decided he would take Mavrick to the Humboldt sheriff’s office. Fucci also communicated with Grant’s grandmother and Mavrick’s mother about this. He said he had nothing to hide.
The DA asked if Fucci had gotten in an altercation with Grant before. Fucci said he had urged Grant to apologize to Lee so that they could get along and visit the ranch. Grant gave him a creepy stare. After Mavrick walked away, Fucci felt uncomfortable with Grant staring at him. Fucci went into the garage to talk to Mavrick and apologized about not realizing it was supposed to be a secret. He didn’t mean to cause any problems between Mavrick and Grant.
The DA asked Fucci about the farm and what he planted in Humboldt County. Fucci explained, and then he was asked if he smoked marijuana. He responded that he smokes for personal use. The DA asked him several questions about that, and asked if Mavrick had not told Fucci that Grant had died. Fucci said no. The DA asked him what happened after Mavrick left that following morning. Fucci explained that before Mavrick left, Mavrick asked Fucci to give him a ride to Elko, Nevada. Fucci said no. Mavrick then asked if Fucci would give him a ride to the Yuba City bus station. Fucci said no and that he would only drop him off at the police station, then Mavrick left. The DA asked Fucci if Mavrick had told him where he was going before he left. Fucci said he didn’t.
The defendant started asking the questions. He asked about Fucci notifying the police at Lakeport that Grant was in the woods and Mavrick took the car, and Fucci confirmed. Were they notified of Mavrick’s injuries? He said yes. Did he tell the police he was Deaf? Fucci said yes. The defendant remarked on how the police didn’t do anything. He asked Fucci if Mavrick had ever physically threatened him or become aggressive to him. Fucci said no. He was asked if he would want to work with Mavrick again in the future. Fucci said yes.

The defendant continued with the fourth witness, Michelina Fisher. The defendant asked her to explain who she was, and she said she is Mavrick’s mother. They spoke about how Mavrick and Michelina are both Deaf, and he asked Michelina where she lives. She responded that she lives in Elko, Nevada. She was asked what Mavrick’s highest education level was. Michelina said 12th grade. After high school, she gave Mavrick a gift to allow him to travel to Norway, Iceland, Svalbard, and Greenland, where he met many people. He had a motorcycle and traveled in Alaska, Central America, and Belize with his ex-girlfriend, and he also traveled to Argentina. She explained that Mavrick owned a business and wanted to meet Deaf homeless people to let them stay at his campsite. He wanted people to stay to start their lives, and it would be a temporary stay. He dreamt of establishing Mav’s Camp or Eyeville.
Mavrick’s mom shared that she thought Mavrick’s vlogs were very educational and that he has a huge following with many, many viewers. She said she felt very inspired for Deaf children who had him as a role model regarding his experiences with traveling as a Deaf person.
The DA asked if there were any accidents during Mavrick’s childhood or life. Michelina said that Mavrick had been run over by a SUV at CSDR, a Deaf school at Riverside in southern California. He broke his shin in two, and this happened when Mavrick was in kindergarten at the age of six. He wore a cast for four months and it took six months for him to recover after that. The defendant asked if any health issues came up after that incident. Michelina said Mavrick had a limp ever since that incident, because his hip bone was uneven by an inch. It was painful, so he had surgery in February 2019 last year. One inch of bone was removed so the hip bone could be evened out. Mavrick was bedridden for one month, and three months later he finally could get around. Michelina said his ex-girlfriend, Emily, took care of him and supported him through it. Michelina said she feels like she’s responsible for what happened to Mavrick when he was run over by a SUV.
The DA asked about Grant, and Michelina explained that Grant had visited Mavrick’s mom, with Mavrick’s permission, as a guest. This happened two times, in June and July. Michelina was asked if Mavrick had a girlfriend or was in a relationship with anyone, and Michelina responded that yes, he had been in one with Emily. Does he have any children? Michelina said yes, he has one, a soon to be two year old son.
The last and sixth witness. The police that Fucci notified at Lakeport came to the stand. His name is Officer Tyler Trouette. The DA called the last witness, Tyler Trouette. He is the policeman who Fucci spoke with at the Lakeport police station when Mavrick was with him. That policeman told him that he had to contact the Humboldt County police. That same policeman was at the stand.
He was asked if he recalled meeting Fucci that night at midnight on August 23. He said yes. What did Fucci tell him? Trouette said Fucci told him that his friend who was in the car was assaulted by someone at Humboldt County. Fucci also told him that his friend was traveling with the man who he got in a fight with, and that man tried to stab his friend who was in the car. Fucci did not notify the police that the man who Mavrick escaped from was missing. Remember, Fucci didn’t know Grant was missing until he arrived home. He saw the police first, then Lee’s ranch, but they couldn’t get in, so they drove to Fucci’s home when he got that message from Grant’s grandmother. Fucci told the police that his friend Mavrick took the car that belonged to the man who stabbed him and parked it at a Dollar General store. The DA asked Trouette why he told Fucci that he had to call the Humboldt police. Trouette said it was the Humboldt police’s responsibility, not the Lakeport police, because it happened in Humboldt County.
Trouette was asked if Mavrick had gotten out of the car at all, and he said no. The DA asked him if he filled out a police report, and he said yes. The defendant asked if he had gotten Fucci’s contact information. He said no. Did he know the police were looking for Mavrick? He didn’t know. Did he know Grant was missing? The policeman said he didn’t know. How could people contact the police there? He said there was a phone at the front. Is the phone accessible to Deaf and hard of hearing individuals? He didn’t know. Did he see Mavrick in the car? He said no. But Trouette knew that he was there because Fucci had told him he came with a friend who was still in the car. Did the policeman check the car and meet Mavrick? He said no. The DA asked him if he had asked if Mavrick needed medical attention since he was stabbed. Trouette said no. When Fucci told him Mavrick took his friend’s car, did Trouette ask for the car information like license plate, type of car, or other details? The policeman said no.
