Greece train disaster
On Tuesday night in Greece, there was a terrible head-on collision between a passenger train with about 350 people on it and a freight train. Both were traveling toward each other on the same track.
The first few cars of the passenger train were badly damaged and there was a large fire. At least 36 people were killed. That number is expected to increase. Over 70 people were hospitalized.
One of the passengers said prior to the collision, the train was delayed because it had to wait for another train to pass through. Authorities said the crash may have been due to human error.
Survivors said it was a terrible scene with fires, cables hanging, broken windows, people screaming, and people trapped.
A station master in the city of Larissa, where the collision happened, was arrested and charged with manslaughter, but the station master denied any wrongdoing.
The prime minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, visited the scene of the crash. He vowed to find the causes and do everything in their power to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Vanessa Bryant gets $29M settlement
ABC News reported that Vanessa Bryant agreed to a settlement worth almost $29 million with Los Angeles County over photos that members of the sheriff’s department took of the helicopter crash that killed her husband and daughter, Kobe and Gianna. The sheriff’s department employees then showed the photos to several others.
ABC said a co-plaintiff whose wife and daughter were also killed in the crash reached a settlement worth over $19 million.
Vanessa’s attorney said it is a successful ending to her “courageous battle to hold accountable those who engaged in this grotesque conduct.”
The helicopter crash happened on January 26, 2020. All nine people on the helicopter were killed.
Drugmaker Eli Lilly lowers insulin cost to $35
Eli Lilly, a giant drugmaker, said it would cap the out-of-pocket cost of its insulin at $35 a month.
News reports said the change would put the company in line with a recent law that imposes a $35 monthly cap for seniors enrolled in Medicare. There is also increased competition from other companies who said they would make and sell insulin at lower costs.
The American Diabetes Association says about 8.4 million people in the U.S. with diabetes rely on insulin.

Chicago Mayor Lightfoot loses reelection
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot lost her reelection race on Tuesday when she failed to make it in a top-two runoff. It is the first time in over 30 years that a Chicago mayor has lost reelection.
An analyst with CNN said Lightfoot “could not overcome years of fights with the police and teachers’ unions, a spike in violent crime during her administration and Chicago’s slow recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.”
The top two candidates in the runoff are Paul Vallas and Brian Johnson.
Remains of missing man found inside shark
In Argentina, a fisherman that caught a shark found the remains of a man who disappeared a few weeks ago inside of the shark. The missing man’s name is Diego Barría. His family recognized a tattoo that was on the remains.
AP News explained that Barría was last seen riding his ATV near the coast on February 18. The ATV was found damaged on a beach two days later but the man was missing.
On Sunday morning, two fishermen said they caught three school sharks near the site of the ATV and when they were cleaning the sharks they found human remains.
Authorities said they believe Barría was in an ATV accident and that his body was dragged into the ocean.
UGA football star facing charges over fatal crash
CBS News reported that police in Georgia have issued arrest warrants for Jalen Carter, a former football star for the University of Georgia and a top NFL prospect, over his alleged involvement in a fatal car crash that killed two people in January.
Carter is 21 years old. The Athens-Clarke County Police Department said he was driving recklessly and racing with another SUV when it crashed.
The other SUV was driven by a UGA staffer named Chandler LeCroy when it veered off the road and crashed into power poles and trees. Chandler was killed along with another UGA player named Devin Willock.
Law enforcement said Carter left the scene of the crash but returned about an hour later and gave misleading statements to police. The crash happened only a few hours after the team celebrated its second straight national championship.
CBS said Carter was projected to be a top-five pick in the upcoming NFL draft as a defensive tackle.
That is all the news for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
