Gallaudet volleyball in NCAA tournament, CSD Riverside football in state playoffs

Renca Dunn, Daily Moth Reporter:
Here are two quick Deaf sports news briefs. One is related to Gallaudet’s volleyball team and the other one is related to California School for the Deaf Riverside (CSDR).

Today at 3pm EST, Gallaudet University’s volleyball team will be playing against Juniata for the first round of the NCAA regional tournament at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) campus. The game will be live-streamed. We have provided a link in this transcript so you can watch the game if you are far away. If you are around the RIT area, you can watch the game in person.

This is an exciting moment because Gallaudet won the United East conference championship last week against SUNY Morrisville. This win automatically bids Gallaudet to the NCAA tournament. The NCAA made out their brackets to split 64 teams into 8 regions and RIT is hosting one of them. RIT is also one of the 8 teams participating in this weekend’s regional tournament.

Based on seeding, Gallaudet will play against Juniata for the first round of the tournament, and Juniata is currently ranked number 7 in the nation. This will be the 5th time that Gallaudet will play against Juniata. If Gallaudet beats Juniata and continues to win, they will advance to Elite 8.

This is the 12th time that Gallaudet is making an appearance in NCAA. Nine of those appearances in the NCAA have been under the head coach, Lynn Ray Boren. One of the coaches on the Gallaudet volleyball team mentioned that it is good to have Gallaudet back in the NCAA tournament since 2016 and is looking forward to the players to get the NCAA experience.

One fun fact that we learned is that there is a Deaf/HoH player on the RIT volleyball team that will also participate in this weekend’s tournament. Pretty cool!

We wish Gallaudet the best of luck today!

The second one is related to CSDR. Their 8-man football team is doing very well this season and has an outstanding record of 10-0 so far. Right now the football team has advanced to Round 2 of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs. This is the first time in the school’s history since the founding year of 1953.

The coaches, players, and fans are very thrilled because the players have been apart from each other for about 1 ½ years due to the pandemic. So, this advancement is very exciting. They will be playing tonight forRound 2 in the playoffs against Desert Christian Knights and if they win, they will be the first team in the school’s history to have 11 wins.

Several articles have mentioned about CSDR’s wins including the LA Times. We have put links to those articles in this transcript. An article from the LA Times mentioned that Junior quarterback Trevin Adams said the team’s attitude is different this year when everyone got together again and that they are playing with a particular kind of energy. Sophomore wide receiver Jory Valencia said that “Ten wins doesn’t define us” – as what they hope will define them is winning the championship.

We wish CSDR the best of luck with their game tonight at 7pm PST. If you are near the area, you can buy tickets to watch the game. We have provided a link in this transcript.

Wow, it is exciting to see this happening! We will keep you posted once we get new updates. For now, let’s make sure there are fans to support Gallaudet this afternoon and CSDR tonight!
