Friday, October 8 top stories
Hello, it is Friday, October 8. I am taking Alex’s place today. Ready for today’s top news briefs?
On Thursday night the Senate voted 50-48 to raise the debt limit by $480 billion through December 3. The bill now goes to the House, where it is expected to pass and once President Joe Biden signs the bill, the U.S. government will be able to pay its bills. If that bill didn't pass, millions of people such as U.S. military service members or social security recipients could have seen their checks be delayed.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said this was like flirting with a self-inflicted crisis but everyone breathed a sigh of relief to see the debt limit bill pass out of the Senate.
We will see if Congress can agree on something between now and December 3 for what to do going forward.
Rachele Mussolini, the 47-year-old far-right politician and granddaughter of Italy's fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, has garnered enough votes in Rome's municipal election for a second term as a city councilor.
Asked about her views on fascism, she told the Italian newspaper: "To deal with this subject, we'd need to talk until tomorrow morning."
Rachele Mussolini is not the first descendant of the Italian dictator to go into politics. Her stepsister, Alessandra Mussolini, served as a member of parliament and was also Member of the European Parliament.

A Russian actress and a film director rocketed to space Tuesday on a mission to make the world’s first movie in orbit. Their rocket lifted off and arrived at the station after about 3 ½ hours and they will stay there for 12 days. They are to film segments of a new movie titled “Challenge,” in which a surgeon played by an actress rushes to the space station to save a crew member who needs an urgent operation after being hit by space debris in orbit.
Are there other plans to film in orbit? Tom Cruise may have plans to film something on the space station. He would fly to space abroad for an action-adventure film directed by Doug Liman.
Whether you want to crunch into a fresh apple straight off the tree, simmer a big pot of applesauce or bake an all-American pie, there's an apple varietal to meet your needs.
Softer, thin-skinned apples will cook down more smoothly for applesauce and apple butter. Although York apples yield more sauce per pound than any other variety, other apple varieties that are great for sauce include Gala, Delicious, Golden and McIntosh.
For snacking and slicing into salad or slaw, Honeycrisp, Cosmic Crisp and Braeburn are preferable. Because they are not too tart, not too sweet and with a lot of juicy crunch.
Granny Smith, Rome, Northern Spy and Jonathan are very desirable for baking desserts because they are firm and slightly tart and won’t fall apart when cooked.
That is all the top stories for today. Have a good weekend and stay with the light!
