U.S. accuses Russia of planning false-flag for Ukraine attack
U.S. officials are accusing Russia of trying to come up with a “false-flag operation in eastern Ukraine” to create a pretext to invade the country. The White House said it is concerned that Russia could cause something terrible to happen against themselves and then use that as a reason to invade Ukraine in the next few weeks. There are about 100,000 Russian troops at its border with Ukraine. The U.S. had three meetings this week with Russian leaders to try and calm tensions, but it seems like there was no progress. In separate but possibly related news, there was a major cyberattack against Ukrainian government sites today.
Epstein-Barr virus may cause multiple sclerosis
Harvard researchers said they’ve found evidence that the Epstein-Barr virus, a common virus, may cause people to develop multiple sclerosis (MS) in the future. MS is when a person’s immune system attacks their own nerves and can cause weakness in limbs, vision problems, and other serious health issues. Harvard researchers looked at blood samples from over 10 million people in the U.S. and found that the risk of MS increased 32-fold after an Epstein-Barr infection. The Epstein-Barr virus causes “mono” in teenagers and young adults. About 90% of adults have antibodies that show they’ve had Epstein-Barr virus, but about 1 million people in the U.S. have MS, so there are several other factors that cause people to develop the disease. A lead researcher said the findings strongly suggest that Epstein-Barr infection is a cause and not a consequence of MS. Scientists say the virus appears to trigger the process of developing MS for those who may have other vulnerable genes. There is no vaccine for Epstein-Barr, but Moderna Inc. is starting a small study to develop a vaccine.
Waukesha car ramming suspect in court
Darrell E. Brooks Jr, the suspect who is charged with ramming his SUV into a holiday parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin on November 21, appeared in court today for his preliminary hearing. He now faces 77 charges in total, with the most serious charges six counts of first-degree intentional homicide for the six people who died. Court documents state that Brooks allegedly beat up his ex-girlfriend a short time before plowing his SUV into the parade, and this ex-girlfriend is the same person who he allegedly ran over with his SUV three weeks prior on November 2. He was jailed for that incident on November 2 but was released on a $1,000 bail. Brooks now faces life in prison. There is a separate investigation on why Brooks was released on a low bail.

Prince Andrew loses military titles
Prince Andrew was stripped of his military titles and royal patronages by Queen Elizabeth after a U.S. judge said a civil lawsuit accusing Andrew of sexual assault against an underage female could proceed. The accuser said the prince used Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking network. Andrew will now defend himself in the case as a private citizen.
Djokovic’s visa canceled
Australia’s Immigration Minister made a decision to cancel Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic’s visa over his status as an unvaccinated person just a few days before he is set to defend his Australian Open title. He has been in a legal struggle with Australian officials over his application for a vaccine exemption after he landed in the country on January 5. He’s been forced to stay at an immigration hotel but was recently released after a judge’s order. On Djokovic’s visa application, he said he is qualified for a vaccine exemption because he contracted Covid-19 in December and recovered from it. There seems to be a conflict between Australian tennis officials and Australian federal officials over whether a previous infection allows an exemption for Djokovic. He may be deported and miss the tournament. His legal team plans to challenge the minister’s decision in court on Sunday.
