Four “deaf” Oscars nominations; ASL livestream

This Sunday is when the 2022 Oscars will take place. It will begin at 8 pm ET on ABC. There are four nominations up for film projects that involve deaf people.

I will talk about the four nominations, but first I want to let you know that the Oscars will provide an ASL livestream with Deaf Interpreters. You can access it live on oscars.com and Oscars YouTube. It is the first time the Oscars is providing Deaf interpreters and this is done in partnership with LaVant Consulting Inc.

The film “CODA,” which has three deaf actors in its main cast, is nominated for Best Picture. The film is considered a top contender for the prize, especially after it won the Producers Guild of America award last week.

Deaf actor Troy Kotsur is nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as Frank Rossi in “CODA.” He has won almost all of the awards in this category during this awards season and is considered the favorite to win the Oscar. If he wins, he will be the first male deaf actor with the golden statue and the second deaf actor after Marlee Matlin won her Oscar for “Best Actress” 35 years ago.

“CODA” director Siân Heder has a nomination for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay). Heder adapted the story of “CODA” from a French film that had a similar plot and transformed it into a Gloucester fishing world.

The fourth nomination is for Netflix’s “Audible,” which is a documentary-style film about a Maryland School for the Deaf football player named Amaree McKenstry-Hall and the ups and downs that he experiences in his life with his family and friends. “Audible” is nominated for Best Documentary (Short Subject). The director is Matt Ogens, who is hearing. Nyle DiMarco is one of the film’s executive producers.

We’ll see who wins on Sunday night.
