It is February 13. Here is today’s news.

U.S. military shoots down three more objects in sky

The U.S. military shot down three more objects in the air over the weekend.

On Friday afternoon in northern Alaska, an F-22 Raptor fired a missile at an object that was floating at about 40,000 feet. President Biden ordered it to be shot down after it was detected. Military officials said the object was the size of a small car and not similar to the spy balloon that was shot down last week near South Carolina.

The object is said to fall over the frozen ocean and that military aircraft were dispatched to collect the debris.

On Saturday, another U.S. F-22 jet shot down an object that was floating about 40,000 feet over Canada in the northern Yukon Territory. Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau said he ordered it to be shot down after both the U.S. and Canadian forces detected it. The object is described as “cylindrical” and was smaller, but similar to the South Carolina balloon.

On Sunday afternoon, an F-16 jet shot down an object that was about 20,000 feet above Lake Huron in waters between Michigan and Ontario, Canada. The object is described as octagonal and had strings hanging off it.

So, it is three objects shot down in three consecutive days. Gen. Glen VanHerck, who is the top military official overseeing U.S. skies, said they were able to spot the objects after making adjustments to U.S. radar after the South Carolina balloon incident.

Today the White House made it clear that there is no indication that these objects had anything to do with aliens.

Turkiye & Syria quake death toll at 36,000+

The Turkiye and Syria earthquakes have now killed over 36,000 people. It is now one week since two very strong earthquakes hit southeastern Turkiye, near its border with Syria. There are still search and rescue crews working to find survivors in freezing weather.

An airport in one of the areas struck by the earthquake reopened today after its damaged runway was repaired by crews working non-stop for four days. That will allow aid to quickly arrive and be distributed.

The leader of the International Red Cross organization said the greatest needs for those affected continue to be food, health and water. He predicted that people would need these things for the next two months.

One anonymous man in the U.S. walked into the Turkish embassy in the U.S. and donated $30 million to help quake victims. The prime minister of Pakistan said it was a Pakistani man who made the donation and said he was “deeply moved.”

News reports in Turkiye said authorities have detained at least 100 people who were responsible for the construction of buildings that collapsed last week. Some are accused of faulty inspections of buildings.

Some political leaders have blamed Turkish President Erdogan for failing to enforce building regulations.

High school student commits suicide after bullying

A 14-year-old high school student in New Jersey tragically committed suicide on February 2. Her name was Adriana Kuch.

CNN reported that she died “days after a TikTok video showed she was attacked by four other teenagers” at her school in Ocean County.

Adriana’s father said the video had a “slew of hateful comments and online bullying” that “drove his daughter to take her own life.”

The suspected attackers are now facing criminal charges in the juvenile system.

Adriana’s father said the school district should have called the police immediately and taken her daughter to the hospital. The school superintendent resigned on Saturday after facing increasing criticism for how he handled the situation.

The father said he will “not sleep’ until the families of the bullies have to watch them stand in front of a judge and plead guilty.

U-Haul driver plows into pedestrians

Today in Brooklyn, a person driving a U-Haul truck plowed into several pedestrians in different locations and injured at least eight people. Police officers pursued the U-Haul and stopped it and arrested the driver. There is a video on Twitter that shows the U-Haul hitting a moped, jumping a sidewalk and narrowly hitting a man on a sidewalk as a police SUV gives chase.

The NYPD said the driver went on a “violent rampage.” Police said the driver screamed that he wanted to die while officers were pursuing him. The driver is a 62-year-old man. It is unknown what the driver’s motive is. Four of the injured are hospitalized.

People have compared the incident to a similar one in 2017 when a man drove a U-Haul truck on a bike path and killed several people. The driver of the 2017 incident, Sayfullo Saipov, is actually facing a jury right now that will decide whether he should get the death penalty. It’s a coincidence.

Kansas City Chiefs win Super Bowl

3 men die falling through ice in Vermont

Three men in Vermont died after they fell through ice while they were ice fishing in two separate incidents at Lake Champlain.

On Thursday, a 62-year-old man was found dead in the water after going ice fishing. His family said he left his home before noon and did not return as expected that night. His truck was left parked near the fishing site and first responders found him in the water wearing a flotation suit.

On Saturday morning, two brothers, aged 71 and 88, died after the UTV they were riding on fell through ice on the lake.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife has advised people to stay off the ice and a popular fishing tournament was canceled. Weather officials in Vermont said due to the above-normal temperatures the region has experienced over the past 2 months, ice thickness on area lakes and ponds is highly variable.

That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
