Mike Pence subpoenaed; FBI searches home

ABC News reported that former Vice President Mike Pence was subpoenaed by the special counsel who is investigating Donald Trump’s actions in trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The special counsel’s name is Jack Smith. ABC said the subpoena follows months of negotiations between federal prosecutors and Pence’s legal team. Jack Smith is seeking Pence’s testimony on Trump’s actions during the 2020 election and documents.

In separate news, the FBI searched Pence’s home in Indiana today for classified documents. ABC said it was a consensual search. The search seems to be similar to what the FBI did with President Biden, going through his home in Delaware.

So it is two separate things that Pence is dealing with — a subpoena and a home search.

Congresswoman Angie Craig assaulted

A Minnesota congresswoman, Angie Craig (D-Minn), was attacked by a man who followed her into an elevator of her apartment building in D.C. on Thursday morning.

D.C. Police said they arrested a 26-year-old man named Kendrick Hamlin and charged him with simple assault. It appears that he is a homeless person.

Police said the suspect was in the lobby area of Craig’s apartment and acting strange as if he was under the influence. He then went into an elevator at the same time as Craig did and randomly did push-ups and then punched her in the face. Craig threw her hot coffee at the man and defended herself. The suspect then ran away but was later found and arrested.

Craig’s staff said she is physically okay and that there is no evidence that the attack was politically motivated.

News about bird flu

I read two different news articles about bird flu, H5N1.

The Denver Post reported that three animals in Colorado, who are now dead, tested positive for bird flu. They are a mountain lion, black bear, and skunk.

Officials with Colorado State Parks and Wildlife first discovered bird flu among wild geese in northeast Colorado last March. They saw a black bear suffering from seizures and euthanized it. Lab testing confirmed the presence of bird flu. Then they saw that a skunk had the virus. In January of this year, a mountain lion was found dead and it tested positive for H5N1.

Officials said mammals typically contract the virus after feeding on infected birds. They said humans should avoid contact with sick or dead birds. Those who have the virus may have neurologic symptoms, general weakness, and organ damage. It is very rare for humans to contract the virus, but it can happen.

The second news is from France24.com. It reported that in Peru, 585 sea lions and 55,000 wild birds have died of H5N1 in recent weeks. The dead animals were discovered in protected coastal areas and officials have urged people and their pets to avoid contact with sea lions and sea birds on the beach.

Jan. 6 rioter carrying Confederate flag sentenced

A Jan 6. rioter who carried a Confederate flag into the Capitol was sentenced to three years on the charge of obstructing an official proceeding and related charges. His name is Kevin Seefried and he is from Delaware.

The federal judge in the case said it was shocking that he brought a Confederate flag into the Capitol and criticized him for using the flagpole to jab at a black U.S. Capitol Police officer. The judge said he hopes Seefried realizes how offensive it is.

Seefried apologized before the court and said he made a terrible mistake and that his family has suffered because of it.

Seefried has a 24-year-old son named Hunter who rioted with him. He was sentenced in October to two years in prison.

NBC News said over 900 people have been arrested, almost 500 have pleaded guilty, and that the investigation is still ongoing.

Two killed in car ramming attack in Israel

Israeli police said an 8-year-old child and a 20-year-old person were killed when a car rammed into a group of people at a bus stop in east Jerusalem. Five people were injured.

Police said they shot and killed the driver of the car. Police said it was a terror attack.

CBS News there has been a week of violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. On Thursday, Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian after he allegedly stabbed someone. On Tuesday, Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian teenager after he allegedly fired on soldiers.

On Monday, Israeli forces killed five suspected Palestinian gunmen in a raid in Jericho who were suspected of shooting into a restaurant. So there are a lot of incidents.

Russia fires missiles and drones towards Ukraine

The New York Times reported that Russia fired a barrage of drones, rockets and cruise missiles today that targeted cities across Ukraine. Russia has also sent many troops and equipment into eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian military said Russia fired 71 cruise missiles and seven Iranian-made drones and that they shot down 65 of them.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy recently traveled around Europe to push allies to give him more support. He said the world can stop Russian terror.
