December 14 political news briefs
Here are today’s political news briefs.
Today is when the Electoral College gathers to cast their votes in 50 states and D.C. to represent the will of the voters. In most states, the electors meet at the state capitol building or the governor’s office. When the votes become official and certified, copies of the results will be sent to the U.S. Senate, to the state’s secretary of state, to the National Archives, and to a local judge. Joe Biden will be the winner because he has 306 electoral votes based on the results from the 2020 election, but it is not official until the end of today and especially when the U.S. Senate counts the votes on January 6.
President Donald Trump is still alleging election fraud and has not conceded, even after the Supreme Court rejected Texas’ lawsuit on Friday. Trump told Fox News on Sunday that it’s “not over.”
On Saturday, there were thousands of pro-Trump protesters who took to D.C. streets to protest the election results. President Trump flew over the crowds in his Marine One helicopter. News reports said four people were stabbed during nighttime during a confrontation between protesters and counterprotesters. 23 people in total were arrested.
Axios reported that demonstrators within a Proud Boys group stole a “Black Lives Matter'' banner and a sign from two historically Black churches and stomped on it and burned it. Police are investigating the incidents as possible hate crimes.

The Michigan state capitol was closed to the public today because police said there were “credible threats of violence.” Arizona had their Electoral College meeting at an undisclosed location to keep its electors safe.
Today the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled 4-3 to reject a lawsuit from Trump’s personal attorneys that challenged election results. It is the fourth time in the past two weeks that the Trump team lost a lawsuit in Wisconsin.
The same thing happened today in the Georgia Supreme Court. The court turned down an appeal from Trump’s lawyers to overturn the state’s election results.
President-elect Joe Biden is expected to give a speech tonight at 8 p.m. after the electoral college is finished with casting its votes. I’ll provide a recap tomorrow.
