Deaf swimmer wins 12 gold medals; Deaf father and CODA son on “The Amazing Race”
We have two Deaf briefs news.
Deaf swimmer wins 12 gold medals
World Deaf Swimming Championship 2023 was hosted recently in Buenos Aires- a city in Argentina. Carli Cronk (17), a U.S. Deaf swimmer, won 12 gold medals and a pair of silver to lead the U.S. to the top of the medal table.

Carli is a Deaf world record holder and this is not her first time earning 12 gold medals.
Last year for the Deaflympics in Brazil, she also got 12 gold medals.
One article mentioned that Carli’s wins included new Championship Records in the women’s 100 free, 200 free, 400 free, 1,500 free, 200 back, and 200 fly. We reached out to Carli for a short interview. We conversed through e-mail so we will share some of her text responses.
First thing we asked was how many medals she has altogether. She told us that in Deaf competition, she has a total of 24 gold medals, but overall 30 medals, 24 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze.
We were curious about her time management being a high school student and getting her training in. Carli said that she has a great support system. She does most of her school work during the 7-hour school day then she focuses on swimming. Overall, she trains about 23 hours a week.
We asked if she plans on trying out for the hearing Olympics. This is her response:
[TEXT] “I am going to the hearing US Olympic Trials to try out for the team. I never actually considered the hearing Olympics because I never thought I would be fast enough. I got my trials cut and I am going to attend trials for the experience but only the top two in each event make the team so attending Paris 2024 is really a long shot. I never say never, but the competition I will be up against is incredible.”
We asked if she was always passionate about swimming, this is her response:
[TEXT] “I was not always passionate about swimming. When I was about age 12, I almost quit but then I met my friends who showed me true friendship and the love of swimming. I decided to stick with swimming and I am so glad I did. Right now I am planning to “hang up the goggles” when I graduate college in 2028 but those plans could always change!”
We asked if there is anything she would like to share with the Deaf community, this is her response:
[TEXT] “Don’t let your disability stop you. Use others doubts to your advantage and show them that you are more than capable of becoming the athlete you dream of being.”
Carli said that her favorite swim style is butterfly stroke, which is her best stroke. She is a senior committed to attending Notre Dame after she graduates because they have a great academic and swim program. We, the Daily Moth, congratulate you for your medals win and wish you the best of luck with your swim journey!

Deaf father and CODA son on “The Amazing Race”
The second Deaf news brief is that there will be a Deaf father and CODA son on the TV show “The Amazing Race” season 35. This show will premiere on Wednesday, September 27th on the CBS channel.
Rob McArthur (Deaf father) from Riverside, California and his son Corey McArthur (CODA) from NYC, will be one of the 13 teams trekking around the world in the hope of winning the prize of $1 million.
Fun fact about Rob’s wife, who is Corey’s mother, is the current superintendent of California School for the Deaf Riverside, April McArthur.
Rob and Corey recently set up their Instagram account so you can follow their journey around the world @robandcorey. We will show you a short clip they posted.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CwldXcZPBq6/
Note: Please go ahead and use the video from the link- show it is on their IG account, but blur out the comments and likes. Show the video clip from the beginning and up to the part that says “deaf people can raise their children and have an intimate relationship with them.” - stop after that. I tried to find the time stamp on the video, but there is none. So, I can only tell you which part. Hope that is clear- text me if not.
The link to their account is posted in the transcript. To watch them on TV, you can tune in on Wednesday, September 27th at 9:30 pm EST on CBS. We wish both of them the best of luck!
