Deaf student to sign national anthem during college football championship

The College Football Playoff National Championship game will take place this Monday, January 8 with Michigan playing against Washington at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The CFP announced that William Stokes, a 12th-grade student from Deer Park, Texas, will perform both the national anthem and “America the Beautiful” in ASL. He attends the Deer Park High School and also attends the Region 4 Regional Day School Program for the Deaf in the greater Houston area.

Stokes’ teacher, Melanie Williams, shared that he was born deaf, plans to go to RIT, and was featured in local news several months ago for his efforts in advocating city officials to install lights for tornado warnings for deaf people after a tornado hit Deer Park.

Stokes’ efforts made an impact as city officials directed strobe lights to be installed on the sirens.

So this will be another achievement for Stokes, to sign the national anthem during the CFP game. Congratulations. Hopefully, we can see him on national television.

He will be signing the anthem for the singer Fantasia and “America the Beautiful” for the Theatre Under The Stars.
