Deaf News Briefs: OSD offering free ASL classes; Jeremy Renner said “I’m sorry” in ASL after accident

Oklahoma School for the Deaf offering free online ASL classes

Here are two Deaf News briefs.

The ASL Specialist at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf, Jolene Reed, said the school is offering free online ASL classes for anyone who registers in the U.S. or around the world.

Reed said over 350,000 students have registered. The courses are ASL 1 and ASL 2. The courses are pre-recorded and self-paced. There are lessons and quizzes.

Reed said registration is still open until May 31 and courses are available until July 31. She said although the classes are free, the school would appreciate donations to the OSD Foundation to cover the costs of the online classes. Reed said the school’s goal is to be open to families of deaf and hard-of-hearing children and people who want to learn basic ASL.

[Advertisement from Deaf Law Center]:

Announcing the New York Adult Survivors Act: Many survivors of sexual assault need time to process the hurt they’ve experienced; it might take years or even decades for a survivor to tell someone what happened to them. For years, our laws were out of step with that reality. Because of that, many survivors lost the opportunity to hold the person who hurt them accountable in court. Now, those survivors are getting a fighting chance. The Adult Survivors Act is a New York State law that creates a one-time, one-year look back window for adult sexual assault survivors who are outside the statute of limitations. That means that any adult survivor – no matter when they were assaulted and even if they are outside the statute of limitations – can file a civil case against their abuser or the institution that protected them, through November 24, 2023.

Jeremy Renner used ASL to communicate after snow plow accident

Yahoo News said actor Jeremy Renner used sign language to tell his family that he was sorry after his snow plow accident in January.

He knew sign language because he worked with deaf actress Alaqua Cox in Marvel’s “Hawkeye.”

Here is a clip of an interview that Renner did with ABC News.

Renner explained that he was using his snow plow to pull his nephew’s truck but it started sliding and when he tried to stop it from hitting his nephew, he was run over. He was hospitalized with many serious injuries but is now recovering.

That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today.
