Deaf West Theatre to create “CODA” stage adaption

Deaf West Theatre and the producers behind the film “CODA” will develop a stage musical version of the story.

The artistic director of Deaf West, DJ Kurs, said “This is an opportunity… to bring the story full circle by bringing it back to members of the Deaf community by making the music accessible through our signed and sung live adaption of the movie.”

A press release explained that Deaf West and the film’s producers are now “out to stage directors, composers, and writers for the stage project.”

AP News explained that “CODA” star Troy Kotsur has performed in 20 different productions by Deaf West. Marlee Matlin and Daniel Durant have also performed in Deaf West’s “Spring Awakening'' in 2015 and 2016. Deaf West Theatre is based in Los Angeles.

“CODA” wins more awards

“CODA” has won more major film awards.

On Saturday night during the Producers Guild Awards (PGA), three producers behind “CODA” won the Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures: Philippe Rousselet, Fabrice Gianfermi, and Patrick Wachsberger.

On Sunday night, “CODA” director Siân Heder won the Writers Guild Awards for Adapted Screenplay.

There’s a lot of buzz that “CODA” will win “Best Picture” during the Oscars on Sunday, March 27 based on its PGA award. Troy Kotsur is also nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Heder is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

CODA Cast visits Gallaudet & White House

The four main actors of the “CODA” cast was in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday. They visited Gallaudet University and gave a panel discussion. They also went to the White House. Marlee Matlin tweeted that President Biden and the First Lady told them that they “loved ‘CODA’ and its theme of family authenticity.”
