Deaf News Briefs: LSD student’s face scratched and bruised; Missing deaf woman in NC

Report: Louisiana School for the Deaf student’s face scratched, bruised

Here are two Deaf News briefs.

WAFB 9News in Louisiana reported last week that a 6-year-old student at the Louisiana School for the Deaf came home from school with scratches and bruising on and around his left eyelid and hairline. The boy’s name is Dakhori Perkins. 9News showed an image of the boy’s eyelid, which clearly shows scratches and some bruising.

The boy’s mother, Terri Patterson, said that’s how the boy looked after he got off the bus on Monday, May 16 and that she was furious, crying, mad, and upset. The mother is now working with an attorney and is demanding answers.

9News said there was a meeting with school administrators the day after the alleged incident and that they received a recording of the meeting. The recording had a school official admitting that they didn’t know when or how the incident happened, but that they are investigating.

The Louisiana School for the Deaf issued a statement to 9News in which they said they are “not allowed to go into further detail about this specific situation but are continuing the investigation in coordination with school officials and the student’s family.”

9News said it’s the second time they’ve done a news report about Dakhori — in 2019, Patterson accused two LSD teachers of “trapping him behind a bookshelf during nap time” and “stuffing (him) into a cubby hole.”

The mother’s attorney remarked about the scratches that “someone should have said something when they saw it because they know he did not show up to school this way.” The attorney also said, “They failed this parent and we’re going to seek justice in this instance.”

Missing deaf woman in North Carolina

There is a 67-year-old deaf woman who is missing in the area of Linville Falls, North Carolina. The Burke County Search and Rescue posted on Facebook on Tuesday that Frances Collett Apperson “was last seen on May 17th, 2022 before her car was located in the Linville Falls parking area off Old N.C. Hwy 105.”

An image of Apperson's parked vehicle was shown — it is a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. It was parked near a trail leading to Linville Falls.

A local news report said Apperson is believed to be heading towards the Linville Gorge. The area is a densely forested, mountainous area which is called the “Grand Canyon of North Carolina.” Relatives of Apperson said they found a small angel along the trail leading to the falls and that there was an identical angel found in Apperson’s car.

On Wednesday, crews used a helicopter to search for Apperson. On Thursday, crews searched along trails but so far they have not announced that they’ve found her. Crews said if you have any information about Apperson, to please call 911 or 828-437-1911.

That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today.
