Deaf news briefs: Julian “Quiet Storm” Smith; Gallaudet University football team rank in preseason poll

We have two quick Deaf news briefs.

Julian “Quiet Storm” Smith

The first one is Julian “Quiet Storm” Smith (32) from Illinois, a professional Deaf boxer in the welterweight division, who won a boxing match after 6 rounds on August 18th against Julio Rosa.

That event was the main card.

There was a video of him on Twitter that went viral. Someone recorded the announcement of his win and wrote in the caption that it was cool to see how Julian found out his win through a sign language interpreter. We will show screenshots.

The link to that Twitter post including the video snippet is in the transcript. A lot of people reacted to that Twitter post.

Some reacted with big support, and some were curious how Julian was able to hear the bell for the end of the match. Julian became a professional boxer starting in 2018, and he has a boxing record of 7-2 with 4 knockouts.

In 2018 the Daily Moth interviewed him about his Chicago Golden Gloves championship win. In that interview, Julian mentioned that he wants to win more tournaments. He stayed true to his words as he has been on a winning journey including his recent match.

We wish Julian the best of luck with his rising career in boxing.

Gallaudet University football team rank in preseason poll

Gallaudet University's football team was picked first in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC)'s preseason poll. Those who voted were the head coaches of the ECFC football teams. The second-place team in the poll is Anna Maria College.

It is not a surprise that Gallaudet is ranked first because they won the ECFC championship in 2022 and appeared in the NCAA tournament. They had 7 wins and three losses last year.

Gallaudet will begin their 2023 season on September 2 at Keystone College. Good luck to the Bison.
