Deaf artist phenom; Las Vegas jail accused of discrimination

Here are two Deaf News briefs.

Deaf artist phenom

There is a 15-year-old deaf artist named Tyler Gordon who is getting a lot of attention and praise for his talent in painting portraits of celebrities. He shares his work on Instagram at @tygordonsworld. You can see paintings of LeBron James, Sidney Poitier, or Betty White. His portrait of LeBron James was featured in TIME magazine last year. Gordon’s signature style is “shadow painting,” which uses black and gray brushes to show highlights and shadows in people’s faces. He did a painting of Vice President Kamala Harris and received a phone call from her, who said he “really has a gift.” News reports said Gordon was born deaf but had surgery at the age of six that allowed him to have partial hearing. He also has a stutter and said he went through bullying, and uses art to “talk without speaking.” You can check out his work on Instagram.

Las Vegas jail accused of discrimination

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that the ACLU of Nevada has filed a complaint with the Department of Justice to request an investigation into the Clark County Detention Center’s treatment of deaf inmates. The complaint said the Metropolitan Police Department has violated the ADA by denying deaf inmates access to ASL interpreters. A senior attorney with the ACLU said one of their deaf clients made multiple requests for an interpreter but all of them were denied. The complaint also accuses the jail of requiring inmates to pay for their own pen and paper to communicate. The jail is also said to provide only TTY instead of upgrading to provide videophone access.
