Deaf Malaysian scales Mt. Everest; Troy Kotsur in “In Cold Light”

Here are two Deaf News briefs.

Deaf Malaysian scales Mt. Everest

The first is a report from The Himalayan Times that a deaf mountaineer from Malaysia reached the peak of Mt. Everest on May 18. His name is Muhammad Hawari Bin Hashim and he is 33 years old. The report said he stood on the peak around 3:30 pm. Congratulations to Muhammad Hawari!

There may be two more deaf people who will reach the peak — Americans Scott Lehmann and Shayna Unger. We did an interview with them about a month and a half ago. They posted an update on Wednesday saying they hope to reach the peak around May 22 if the weather and conditions are good.

Troy Kotsur to star in crime thriller “In Cold Light”

The second Deaf News brief is a report from Deadline that Troy Kotsur will have a lead role in an upcoming crime thriller film called “In Cold Light.” The other star in the film is Maika Monroe.

Deadline said the film is due to shoot later this year and that a company called XYZ Films is handing world rights and is introducing the film to buyers at this week’s Cannes Market.

The synopsis of the film said Monroe’s character, Ava, is trapped, pursued by those who killed her brother and by her own demons. She has to make a choice, to either save herself and fight another day or to push and become the woman she wishes she could be.

It is not yet clear what kind of role Kotsur will have. This film will be his first after winning his best supporting actor Oscar for CODA.

That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today.
