2019 Winter Deaflympics: Sunday, December 16
Three U.S. skiers in men’s Super-G; U.S. hockey defeats Kazakhstan 14-0; U.S. curling loses to Finland and Russia, and U.S. men’s chess team defeated by Italy 3-1
Alex: Hello, today is Sunday and we are in Santa Caterina. We are staying in a nice hotel.
Callie: Yeah, it feels like a ski resort here. Most ski and snowboard events are within walking distance around here. Every place looks like a log cabin with wooden architecture. There are many international people sleeping here and they are easygoing and friendly. This hotel provides buffet style meals three times a day; breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is diverse and delicious! It is really nice.
Alex: Great job, Italy’s organizing committee for arranging everything.

Now, we have four updates regarding U.S. men’s athletes in four different sports - alpine skiing, hockey, curling and chess.
Callie: First, alpine skiing.
Alex: Men’s super-G. It’s a speed race down the mountain with wide gates placed along the course. Each skier goes down with the goal of carving good turns through the gates. The skier with the fastest time wins the gold medal. That’s with only one run down the mountain. We have 3 Americans in this race.
We’ve finished the Super G race. First place is Italy. Second and third place is France.
Out of our three Americans, the best time was 11th place out of 33. Placing at 11th place was Jakob Wollan.
Callie: Who won the first place in Super G? He is from Italy and his name is Giacomo Pierbon. After he skied down, he proposed to his girlfriend at the bottom. People there were heartfelt by the proposal.

Alex: Indeed, it was a nice proposal. It is his third gold medal for this Winter Deaflympics.

Now moving on to the second update, US Men hockey beat Kazakhstan 14 - 0.
Jim Crane: We just won against Kazakhstan, 14-0. What do you think of tonight’s game?
Miles Gates: I thought the U.S. team played good. I told the team to continue working hard and to make good plays. Take good shots on the net. Just making sure we’re ready for Russia on Tuesday.
Alex: Yeah, it was a lopsided game. US Men hockey team has a robust program while Kazakhstan is relatively new. But I hope Kazakhstan continues to improve and make progress in their hockey program.
Callie: Do you remember a few days ago when we attended the hockey match and there were four Italian referees who came and shook our hands? They are super friendly.

Alex: Absolutely, they are friendly.
Callie: Update on U.S. Men’s Curling - we had two games today that we lost. At the morning game against Finland, the final score was 2-7. The evening game against Russia was 3-9.

Alex: It will be tough for Men’s Curling Team to make it to the top 4 because those with the best records qualify for the quarterfinals. However, they still have more games this week.
Callie: As for Chess, U.S. Men’s Chess team played 4-on-4 team matches with other countries. In our 4-on-4 match, we lost to Italy, 1-3. With four U.S. players against four Italian players, three Italian players beat three of our players, while one U.S. player beat one Italian player. Oscar Petrov is the U.S. player who beat the one Italian player. He’s only 15 years old.
Alex: You know you can watch some livestreaming of the Deaflympics games by going on YouTube - WD2019 MEDIA
Roy: Hi, I’m Roy. This is my sign name. I’m from Ireland. This is my job with filming. What is it? We offer live streaming. Go to YouTube and type in WD2019 Media. There are plenty of live shows of curling games. This is the technology I use. I hope you’ll watch! Thank you.
Callie: Today’s medal count — In first place is Russia with a total of 26 medals. Second place is Italy with 4 medals. Three countries tied with 3 medals each: France, Ukraine, and Czech Republic.
Alex: Now, I’d like to teach you two Italian signs. The first one for a ‘big city’ and ‘small town’.
Callie: That’s all for today. See you tomorrow! Bye.
Alex: Good night! Bye.
