Quick Deaf History: Deaflympics

I want to share a quick cool Deaf history fact. This coming May, the summer Deaflympics will be happening in Brazil. The first Deaflympics was hosted in 1924 in Paris, France. There were 148 athletes from 9 different countries from Europe that gathered. In 1949, the Winter Deaflympics first started in Austria. There were 33 athletes from 5 different countries. However, in 1924- was it called the Deaflympics? No. It was called “The Silent Games.” As time went on, the name changed to the one we know today: “Deaflympics.”

What I thought was cool was that the Paralympics started in 1960. The Silent Games aka Deaflympics was established in 1924 and it is the first recognized games for people with disabilities.
