Disney + releases “Echo” trailer starring Alaqua Cox

Disney Plus released a 2-minute trailer of the upcoming first season of Marvel’s “Echo,” which stars Alaqua Cox, a Deaf Native American actress. She has the role of Maya Lopez / Echo. The trailer shows sign language in various scenes and Cox’s character riding a motorcycle and doing all kinds of superhero moves and fight scenes.

All episodes will be available on Jan 10, 2024 on both Disney Plus and Hulu. It is rated TV-MA and if you have a Disney Plus account, you have to set it to TV-MA to stream.

Cox’s Echo character made her debut in the “Hawkeye” series. Echo has the power to perfectly copy another person’s movements.

“Variety” said this is the first superhero series ever to center on a deaf and Native American character. There are also at least two Deaf writers behind the scenes: Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman.

Cox graduated from the Wisconsin School for the Deaf. She is an amputee and wears a prosthetic leg. Her “Echo” character also wears a prosthetic leg, so there is representation for not only Deaf and Native Americans but also for those who have physical disabilities.

“Variety” said the series’ director and executive producer, Sydney Freeland, is Navajo and grew up on the tribe’s reservation in New Mexico. Cox is a citizen of the Menominee Nation and is of Mohican descent. There are at least six (hearing) Indigenous actors in the series, so there is a lot of representation.

Freeland told “The Hollywood Reporter” that she took ASL lessons to be able to have basic communication with Cox.

So — if you have Disney Plus or Hulu, you can mark your calendars for Jan 10.
