Deaf History: The Huddle

Alex: The football huddle was invented in the 1890’s by a Gallaudet football player named Paul D. Hubbard. He was the quarterback. To block his opponents from seeing his signs when he called plays, he gathered his teammates to create a circle around him. That’s the huddle!

After Gallaudet, Hubbard became a teacher, coach, and athletic director at the Kansas School for the Deaf. He died in 1946 at 75 years of age.
