House passes $95B for Ukraine, Gaza, Israel

The House of Representatives passed a $95 billion package that gives foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies.

$61 billion of that is for Ukraine.

President Biden urged the Senate to pass it quickly so he can sign it and have the U.S. send weapons and equipment to Ukraine to meet their needs in their defense against Russia.

The bill provides about $9 billion in humanitarian assistance in Gaza and $4 billion towards Israel’s missile defense systems.

TikTok may be forced to sell or face ban

The House of Representatives passed legislation that would force TikTok to be divested (sold) by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or face a ban in the U.S. if there is no sale within a year.

The bill now goes to the Senate. The TikTok measure is a part of the $95 billion aid package for Ukraine, Gaza, and Israel.

Members of Congress have expressed concerns that the Chinese government could track the data of Americans through ByteDance/TikTok.

There are over 150 million people in the U.S. who use TikTok.

The app’s officials and other experts said there’s no evidence that TikTok has shared U.S. data with the Chinese government.

Supreme Court to hear case on homeless encampment bans

The Supreme Court will hear arguments today on whether it is constitutional for cities and states to punish homeless people if they camp on public property.

The case concerns a city in southern Oregon, Grants Pass. It has several ordinances that bar camping on public property or in city parks.

Three homeless people sued the city on behalf of its homeless population arguing that the ordinances were unconstitutional.

Two federal courts sided with the plaintiffs. A judge said the city couldn’t punish people if they needed to sleep outside with protection from the elements or for sleeping in their car at night if they have no other place to go.

CBS News said the case before the Supreme Court is the most significant case on the homelessness issue in decades. A decision should be coming in June.
