Filming for “Flash Before the Bang” underway in Oregon
The Statesman Journal in Oregon reported that the film, “Flash Before the Bang,” which is about an inspiring story of the track and field team from the Oregon School for the Deaf winning a state championship in 1986, is now in full production after it was delayed about a year ago.
The production is led by Deaf brothers and OSD alumni / former track athletes Jevon and Delbert Whetter and it has big-time financial backing with executive producers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
The cast includes Russell Harvard, Daniel Durant, Alaqua Cox, and Grace Byers (a CODA actress).
It also has eight actors who will play the roles of athletes on the track and field team, who are all first-time actors and deaf with one of them also having Usher syndrome.
Harvard will play the team’s coach. Durant and Cox are assistant coaches. Byers will have a role as a principal.
The article said filming locations include the Oregon School for the Deaf in Salem and other locations in Oregon. The film may be released in 2025.
One cool fact from the article is that OSD’s dark orange cinder track is the same as what it was in 1986, as well as most of the buildings at the school. It made it easier to set the film in the 1980s.
