It is Wednesday, May 4. Here are today’s top stories.
Dave Chappelle attacked onstage
A man attacked comedian Dave Chappelle as he was giving a set onstage at the Hollywood Bowl last night.
Videos on social media show a man running towards Chappelle and attempting to tackle him, but Chappelle managed to swerve out of the way.
His security team and others swarmed on the man and inflicted injuries on him, sending him to a hospital.
Los Angeles police said the suspect is Isaiah Lee and that he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, with the weapon being a plastic replica gun that shoots a blade. He is being held on a $30,000 bail.
Chris Rock was at the show and joked if the attacker was Will Smith.
Oklahoma governor signs abortion ban
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) signed into law a bill that prohibits abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, which is a similar law that Texas has in place. The law bans abortions when a heartbeat is detected and allows private citizens to sue abortion providers or anyone who helps a woman obtain an abortion for up to $10,000.
Abortion providers in Oklahoma said they will stop providing services for women after six weeks of pregnancy. The law says those who provide an abortion after six weeks faces up to 10 years in prison and up to $100,000 in fines.
The Oklahoma law may be allowed to remain for good because the Supreme Court, based on Monday’s leaked opinion, seems set to overturn Roe v. Wade and allow individual states to decide abortion laws.
JD Vance wins Ohio primary
In Ohio, J.D. Vance won the Republican primary for an open Senate seat and will go up against Democratic winner and U.S. Representative Tim Ryan during the general election in November.
Vance was endorsed by Donald Trump and it’s clearly helped him to emerge from a five-way primary. His win shows that Trump continues to hold a lot of sway in Republican politics.
Vance is the author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” a 2016 bestseller that was turned into a film in 2020. He is a venture capitalist (investor) who has the support of Peter Thiel, a billionaire who is the co-founder of PayPal.
The Ohio Senate race between Vance and Ryan will be one of the top races to watch in the fall.

Intuit / TurboTax to pay $141 million for deceiving customers
Intuit / TurboTax will pay a $141 million settlement for deceiving customers in the U.S. that their online tax filing services would be free.
AP News explained that over 4 million taxpayers were affected when they were steered away from services that were supposed to be free under a federal government program and into TurboTax’s commercial products.
New York Attorney General Letitia James and all the attorneys general of the other 49 states approved the $141 million settlement. James said “Today, every state in the nation is holding Intuit accountable for scamming millions of taxpayers.”
Customers who were deceived are expected to receive about $30 for each tax year and will automatically receive notices and checks by mail.
Federal Reserve raises interest rate
The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by a half-percentage point today. ABC News explained that the Fed is fighting against “the worst inflation in 40 years” and that it is “its most aggressive move since 2000.”
ABC News explained that “the Fed’s goal is to cool spending — and economic growth — by making it more expensive for individuals and businesses to borrow. The central bank hopes that higher costs for mortgages, credit cards and auto loans will slow spending enough to tame inflation yet not so much as to cause a recession.”
The Fed said they expect to continue to raise interest rates in the future.
Dallas toddler mauled by coyote
A 2-year-old child in Dallas was attacked by a coyote on the front porch of the child’s home on Tuesday night. The boy was hospitalized in critical condition.
A police officer who responded to an emergency call saw the coyote in a nearby park and shot at it, causing it to flee into a wooded area. It is not known if the coyote was hit and there is a search.
ABC News said a few days ago, in Southern California, a coyote attacked a 2-year-old girl. That coyote was shot dead.
Experts suspect that neighborhood residents fed the coyote and that it caused the animal to become unafraid of neighborhood residents.
