Hello, welcome to The Daily Moth! It is Wednesday, May 13. Here are coronavirus updates.

Before I go into today’s news, I want to correct something I said yesterday. I said House Democrats were proposing a bill that would provide $6,000 per month to Americans impacted by Covid-19 — that was an error, it should have been up to $6,000 in total in a “second round” of payments. The proposal is worth $3 trillion and includes funding for many other things. Republicans said they are opposed to the proposal. My apologies for the misinformation.

Now, on to today’s news.

Harvard University announced that their fall semester would be conducted online with the aim to have students back on campus by January.

New York state has 102 cases of children being sickened with Pediatric Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome Associated with Covid-19. Symptoms are severe dehydration, rash, racing heart, persistent fever, and abdominal pain. Most children who tested positive or are exposed to Covid-19 have mild symptoms, but this new syndrome is causing concern. At least 14 other states said they have cases.

Arizona is allowing gyms and pools to reopen today. The state has already reopened barber shops, retail shopping, and dine-in services.

New Jersey is allowing nonessential retail stores to open only for curbside pickup starting on Monday.

Washington, D.C. is extending its stay-at-home order until June 8. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said there must be 14 days of decreases in cases and more contact tracing before the order can be lifted.

Los Angeles’ public health director has recommended the county to extend stay-at-home orders for at least three more months — throughout nearly the entire summer. L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti said people should not overreact to that recommendation and said that the city will never be completely open until we have a cure.

Tesla’s factory in Fremont will be allowed to reopen and resume operations with safety protocols in place. Elon Musk complained on Twitter a few days ago about his factory being shut down and defied local authorities by reopening the factory yesterday. Now the county said it’s okay as long as Tesla follows safety protocols.

Texas’ Attorney General, who is a Republican, has warned Democratic officials in Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio that their local coronavirus restrictions were unlawful because they were stricter than Gov. Greg Abbott’s orders. They differ on restrictions on wearing masks, extensions on stay-at-home orders, and rules on religious assemblies.

In Fresno, there were anti-lockdown protesters who walked up to the second-floor apartment of Fresno City Council President Miguel Arias and knocked on his door. Videos show the president telling the protesters to go away and pushing two of them down the stairs, causing them to stumble. Arias was cited with three counts of assault. Arias said the protesters were on private property and banged on his front door.

There is a viral video of a woman getting into a fight with several Red Lobster restaurant employees in York, Pennsylvania on Mother’s Day. People on social media said the woman was angry that she had to wait three hours to pick up food.

A family of a police officer in Lodi, California named Jordan Duncan said he was fired because he refused to follow California’s stay-at-home orders. Duncan’s wife said he challenged his supervisors on the orders and was not willing to shutdown businesses. Duncan’s father is a church pastor who was ordered to shut down because it held services in violation of orders on public gatherings. A GoFundMe for the fired office has raised over $27,000 in one day.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said there could be serious, lasting economic damage to the U.S. if there are no more stimulus packages. He said Congress may have to do more and said although it may be costly, it is worth it. He said a Fed survey found that 40% of people making less than $40,000 a year who had a job in February lost their job in March.

Since March 21, only two migrants seeking asylum in the United States at the southern border were allowed to remain in the country. Over 20,000 migrants were blocked from coming in and was told to go either remain in Mexico or return to their home countries. The Centers for Disease Control issued a 30-day restriction on all nonessential travel in the U.S. on March 20 and now the Trump administration want to extend those restrictions indefinitely. Advocates for immigrants are worried that the Trump administration is taking advantage of Covid-19 to reduce immigration, which has long been a priority of President Trump.

A 113-year-old woman in Spain named Maria Branyas was infected with Covid-19 but survived. She was born in 1907 in San Francisco and moved to Spain in 1915. She is the oldest living person in Spain. She was in isolation for several weeks and recently tested negative for Covid-19. She said she believes that nothing will be the same again in the new world (post-pandemic). She said you need a “new order, a change in the hierarchy of value and priorities, a New Human age… health and strength, you will succeed”
