The U.S. Supreme Court rejected former president Donald Trump’s request to block the Jan. 6 House Committee from having access to his White House records. Breonna Taylor raid-related begins trial
The trial begins for Brett Hankison, a former Louisville [Kentucky] police detective. He is facing three charges of wanton endangerment after firing “blindly” 10 shots during the raid. Wanton endangerment means reckless and extreme indifference to the value of human life.
The shots he fired had passed through Breonna’s apartment walls into a neighboring apartment, endangering the three people who were sleeping there: a pregnant woman, her husband and their 5 year-old. Brett is charged with one count for each of the neighboring apartment’s occupants. They were not hit by the shots. This is not a case for who is responsible for the death of Breonna Taylor.
National Guard troops to arrive in DC
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved a request from the District of Columbia government and the US capitol police for 700 National Guard troops. This is to respond ahead of the arrival of around 25 separate trucker convoys protesting against pandemic restrictions, replicating recent protests in Canada. National Guard troops will not carry firearms or take part in law enforcement. They are to direct traffic and “provide command and control” from Saturday until March 7.
Roman mosaic discovered in London
The find is the largest area of approximately 1,800 years old Roman mosaic to have been discovered in London in at least 50 years The spot is near the Shard - the capital’s tallest building, close to London Bridge. Archaeologists who unearthed the whole big spread of mosaic think it is a dining room, part of a Roman “mansio” or “upmarket motel” offering accommodation. The lavish decorations and size indicated only “high-ranking officers and their guests” would have stayed there.
