Police fatally shoot man who was double amputee

Last Thursday, police in southern Los Angeles county shot and killed a 36-year-old man who was a double amputee and wheelchair user. His name was Anthony Lowe.

Cellphone videos posted online show two police officers aiming their tasers or guns at Lowe as he got off his wheelchair while holding a knife. Lowe used his arms to move away from the cops, who continued to follow him while aiming their weapons at him. The videos don’t show the moment of the shooting, but it shows one of the officers appearing to switch from a taser to a firearm.

The police department at Huntington Park said officers were responding to a call about a stabbing and that the suspect was someone who was a wheelchair user. Police said the suspect ignored commands and threatened to advance or throw a knife at officers and that they deployed two separate tasers but when they were ineffective they shot him about 10 times, hitting him in the torso. Lowe was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lowe’s family said they are heartbroken and filled with anger and rage at the fact that police had to gun down a guy who had no legs. Lowe was a father of two and his family said he was struggling recently after he had to have both of his legs amputated.

Lowes’ family are demanding that the officers be terminated and face murder charges. The LA sheriff’s department is investigating.

FBI searches Biden’s beach home

President Biden’s personal attorney said FBI agents searched through his beach home in Rehoboth, Delaware this morning as a part of a widening investigation on classified documents that were discovered at Biden’s other private locations. The search was not a surprise — it was a planned and consensual visit. News reports said no classified documents were found.

Former president Donald Trump has his own investigation on classified documents that is at a more serious phase because the DOJ considers it a criminal investigation.

Biden’s situation has not reached that level.

Tom Brady says he is retiring “for good”

Tom Brady posted a video on social media this morning to announce that he is retiring for good from football. Naturally, there may be doubts about whether he will change his mind because that’s what happened last year. But Brady said this time it is “for good” and seemed emotional in his video, expressing gratitude for being allowed to live out his dream.

Brady already has a job waiting for him, an analyst for Fox Sports. He signed a 10-year, $375 million contract last summer.

Brady is considered one of the greatest football players of all time with his seven Super Bowls and holding the record for the NFL’s leader in passing yards and touchdown passes. He played for 23 seasons.

Alec Baldwin formally charged

Actor Alec Baldwin was formally charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter by the Santa Fe district attorney’s office for his role in the accidental shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a film set in New Mexico.

If Baldwin is convicted, he may face up to five years in prison. Prosecutors would have to prove that Baldwin knew there was live ammunition in the gun but failed to be careful.

The film set’s armorer was also charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors said the armorer was inexperienced and that Baldwin did not take firearms training seriously.

Baldwin’s attorney said the charge is a “miscarriage of justice” and that they would fight the charges and will win.

Australia found radioactive capsule

Australian officials announced they found the missing radioactive capsule that is about the same size as a coin after it went missing in Western Australia. Officials previously warned that the capsule carried the same power as ten X-rays in an hour if someone was near it. The capsule is used in mining operations and fell out of a truck.

Officials said a search team found the capsule near a mining town. The mining company, Rio Tinto, issued an apology and promised to investigate what happened.
