UK deaf audiences can see captioned films before general release

AP News reported that deaf moviegoers in the United Kingdom can watch captained movies from Paramount Pictures in theaters the day before general release.

The CEO of the British Deaf Association (BDA) told AP that it’s “ground-breaking” because the Deaf community feels that they are the last ones to know, to watch something, the last ones for everything, but with this initiative, they will be the first.

The BDA said in a press release that “Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing cinema-goers will receive VIP first, captioned, view of Paramount Pictures theatrical releases in cinemas across the U.K.”

AP said Paramount has been running deaf awareness training with cinema managers and staff in U.K. cities.

Paramount will provide captioned films the day before general release starting with “Transformers One” on October 10. In the future, Paramount will do the same for “Gladiator II,” “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” and “The Smurfs Movie.”
