Two Deaf women who are best friends die in car crash
A sad incident occurred around 3am on June 5th in Memphis, Tennessee. Two deaf women were on their way back home from a gathering and lost control of the car and crashed. There were no other cars involved, it was just their car. The two deaf women were identified as Tawanda Houston (36) and Savannah Hatchett (48). In the news articles, the police said both died on scene. I have looked through comments on Facebook, the Deaf community in Memphis are grieving. Many mentioned that the both of them were so sweet and loved to have fun. One person mentioned that it is a great loss for everyone, especially with those who have not met these two women.
We reached out to Tawanda’s family member, Nicholas Norman, who is Tawanda’s cousin and works as a teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing kids in Tennessee, to share a comment. Nicholas said that Tawanda and Savannah were best friends for more than 12 years. The both of them were so close, just like sisters. He said that the both of them were always there at every event whether it is like a young aged type or an older age type of event- it did not matter, they still went. The both of them were always involved within the Deaf community. Nicholas said you could count on these two being there. He said that the community is definitely grieving and never thought that two best friends would end up dying together.
I looked at Facebook and Savannah’s funeral was already arranged last Saturday by Savannah’s family. For Tawanda, it will be on June 19th. There is a GoFundMe link for Tawanda. Her family is trying to raise support to help the cost of the funeral expenses. On the GoFundMe link, it says that Tawanda leaves behind 5 kids.
