Two Deaf stage performances: “TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS” and “Fidelio”

Here are two briefs about two different Deaf stage performances.

The first is Deaf Austin Theatre’s “TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS.” It opens today/tonight on May 10 and it will run for three weekends in May. Tickets start at $25.

The story is about an online advice columnist named Sugar who helps people with heavy questions about life.

There are four performers in the cast: Leila Hanaumi in the lead role of Sugar and Russell Harvard, Bethany Borsotti, and Tyler James Fortson as letter writers. It is directed by Brian Cheslik.

For those who are not able to see the performance in person, there will be a one-time livestream performance on May 26. It will cost $25 to watch it. Links with more information about the stage performances and the livestream is available in the description/transcript.

The second stage performance is Beethoven’s Fidelio, a collaboration between Deaf West Theatre and its artistic director DJ Kurs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and an internationally-known music/artistic director, Gustavo Dudamel.

According to a press release, “the production explores Beethoven’s only opera through the lens of his identity as a Deaf artist who was losing his hearing when Fidelio premiered in 1805.” The performance combines a stage play that tells a story, combined with singing and music from an orchestra.

About 170 musicians, cast and choir members are involved in the production. The performances include music and sign language.

The cast includes a choir with deaf performers from Venezuela called Coro de Manos Blancas (White Hands Choir). It also features Deaf actors such as Daniel Durant, Amelia Hensley, Mervin Primeaux-O’Bryant, and others.

There will be two performances at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles on May 16 and 17. Tickets cost between $94 to $259.

The production will then go overseas to Barcelona for performances on May 26 and 27, to Paris on May 30 and 31, and London on June 2 and 3. This is the first European tour for Deaf West Theatre.
