Breonna Taylor settlement

The city of Louisville (KY) has reached a wrongful death settlement with the family of Breonna Taylor for $12 million and an agreement to undergo police reforms. Taylor, an EMT worker who was studying to be a nurse, died six months ago when three police officers burst into her apartment during a no-knock warrant and and sprayed bullets inside after they were shot by Taylor’s boyfriend, who thought the officers were intruders. Breonna Taylor’s name and image became a major part of Black Lives Matter protests, with many calling for the officers to be arrested. One officer, Brett Hankison, has been fired and the investigation on the officers’ actions is ongoing. The mother of Taylor, Tamika Palmer, said today was significant but that it was only the beginning of getting full justice.

Hurricane Sally nearing landfall

Category 1 Hurricane Sally’s outer bands are now brushing against the gulf coast. At the time I’m signing this news, the hurricane is directly south of Alabama. A major concern is flooding because the hurricane is slow moving, which means some areas could see up to 30 inches of rain. There is already flooding in Gulf Breeze, near Pensacola and Biloxi, Mississippi. The hurricane is forecast to move northeast overnight.

North Carolina man arrested for driving into BLM supporters

A 27-year-old man in North Carolina was charged with aggravated assault for allegedly driving his SUV into two Black Lives Matter protesters who were standing on a crosswalk on Saturday night. A video shows the SUV accelerating against protesters who were standing in front of it. The SUV seemed to bump over a protester’s legs and drove off. One protester was hospitalized. The driver was identified after a police investigation and he turned himself in today.

South Dakota attorney general’s car strikes, kills man

The Attorney General of South Dakota, Jason Ravnsborg, said he struck and killed a man with his car on Saturday night. He did call police after the impact, but said he thought he hit a deer. Ravnsborg said he called the local sheriff and looked around the scene that night, but couldn’t find anything. He said the next morning he went to the scene with his chief of staff and found the body of a 55-year-old man named Joe Boever. The deceased man’s cousin said on that night, he was walking to his own vehicle because it was crashed into a ditch in a prior incident. There will be an investigation that will be overseen by the state governor.

Abraham Lincoln’s hair sold for $81,000

A 2-inch lock of Abraham Lincoln’s hair and a telegram about his assassination in 1865, which had blood on it, was sold in an auction for over $81,000. Time reported that the hair was removed during Lincoln’s “postmortem examination after he was fatally shot at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.” The hair and the telegram given to the family of Lincoln’s widow, Mary Todd Lincoln, and was kept within the family until it was sold in an auction in 1999, and now it’s sold again. It is not known who bought the items.

Israel / Bahrian / United Arab Emirates enter in normalization deals

President Donald Trump invited leaders from Israel, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates to preside over formal diplomatic agreements between the countries. The agreement was called the “Abraham Accord.” Previously both UAE and Bahrain looked at Israel as illegitimate, but that’s changed now. The UAE thanked Israel for “choosing peace and halting annexation of Palestinian territories.” Both Israel and Bahrain said this would bring a new era of peace. Trump said the ceremony was a “flowering of his Middle East peace plan.”
