Secretary of State Antony Blinken testified before a House committee for about five hours on Monday to answer questions related to the Afghanistan withdrawal. Axios said he faced intense criticism and calls to resign from furious Republicans, but “refused to concede it could have been handled differently.” Blinken said President Biden’s decision to end the war in Afghanistan was “righteous.”

Blinken said there are still about 100 U.S. citizens and thousands of green-card holders who are still in the country.

Today Blinken is going through another round of testimony before a Senate committee.

The Kremlin announced today that Russian President Putin will isolate himself for some time because several people close to him tested positive for the coronavirus. News reports say Putin tested negative for Covid-19.

Putin’s last meeting was with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Moscow on Monday.

In April, Putin received two doses of the Russian Covid-19 vaccine, Sputnik V.

The storm Nicholas made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane near Matagorda, Texas at 1 a.m. this morning with sustained winds of 75 mph. There are no reported injuries, but over 300,000 homes and businesses are without power in southeast Texas.

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attended the Met Gala wearing a white gown with the words, “Tax the Rich” written in large red letters on the backside. There was criticism because gala tickets cost about $30,000. AOC tweeted that she went to the gala as a part of her responsibilities as a New York elected official. She said in order to provide childcare, healthcare, and climate action for all, taxing rich people is necessary.

In Chicago, a 37-year-old mother, Fallon Harris, was arrested and charged with shooting and killing her 12-year-old son, Kaden Ingram. ABC 7 News reported that audio and video evidence shows that on Saturday morning, the mother asked Kaden at gunpoint to hand over a SD memory card. The son said he did not know where it was. The mother then shot him, walked away to answer the telephone, and then walked back to him and asked one more time where the SD card was. Kaden repeated that he didn’t know where it was and the mother shot him a second time. Kaden was taken to a hospital but died.

Harris is charged with murder and is being held in jail without bond. She faces life in prison if convicted. She was a legal gun owner.

The father, Lavell Ingram, told ABC 7 News that it hurts and that he feels he’s lost everything in the world. Lavell said Harris was a loving mother but was struggling with mental illness. He said she met with a therapist the day before the shooting.

A new book by journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa reported that after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, a top military general, Mark Milley, was worried that Trump would order a dangerous military strike or launch nuclear weapons. The book says Milley asked top officials to come to a secret meeting in his Pentagon office to discuss the procedure for nuclear strikes. Milley asked them to not take orders from anyone unless he was involved, no matter what they were told. The book is called “Peril” and is based on over 200 interviews and a trove of documents, calendars, diaries, emails, and other records. The book will be released next week.

She died after giving birth to a baby girl while on a ventilator. The father, Daniel, became severely ill with Covid-19 and was hospitalized. He died on Thursday, September 9.

Neither Davy or Daniel were vaccinated. Family members said when the couple contracted the coronavirus, they thought they would recover quickly. The five children are now being cared for by their grandparents. There is a GoFundMe for the family that has raised almost $250,000.
