Tuesday, October 26 top stories
It is Tuesday, October 26. Here are today’s top stories.
There are several news stories about how this year’s Thanksgiving meal will be the most expensive meal ever because of rising costs of food. The Seattle Times said according to experts, “nearly every component of the traditional American Thanksgiving dinner, from the disposable aluminum turkey roasting pan to the coffee and pie, will cost more this year.” The price increases are blamed on problems and backlogs with the supply chain, high transportation expenses such as gasoline, shortages in labor, and bad weather. Prices for food are up almost 5% compared with last year and prices for meat, poultry, fish and eggs are up over 10% compared with the same time last year. Another analyst explained that there is an income-inequality component to this issue because the rich have gotten richer during the pandemic and will therefore be spending more than ever. It is likely that the higher costs for Thanksgiving will also translate to higher costs for the holiday gifting season.
In Boise, Idaho, there was a shooting at a mall on Monday afternoon that killed two people and injured five people. A witness told local news that they were in a Macy’s when he heard over ten gunshots.
When police officers arrived at the mall, they encountered the suspect and exchanged gunfire. An officer was injured and the suspect was also wounded and taken to a hospital. The officer has been released from the hospital but the suspect is in critical condition.
One of the victims is a 26-year-old security guard named Jo Acker. The identity of the second victim and the gunman has not yet been released.
In Colorado, a hiker who was lost did not answer multiple phone calls from rescuers because they did not recognize the phone number. The hiker was on Mount Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado, and when they didn’t return on time, there were search crews sent out that canvassed the area and tried calling the hiker, who had wandered off trail and was trying to find their car. The hiker finally found their car after 24 hours and said they had no idea rescuers were trying to contact them. The Lake County Search and Rescue team posted on Facebook that if you’re traveling somewhere and are “overdue,” to please answer phone calls because it may be a search and rescue team trying to confirm you're safe!

Last week in Houston, a large privately-owned plane with 21 people on it crashed shortly after trying to take off and burst into flames. Fortunately, all the passengers and crew managed to escape with their lives. News reports said the plane wouldn’t go up during takeoff so the pilots tried to stop the plane, but there wasn’t enough runway left. The plane slammed through a fence, went across a road, and crashed into trees and power poles. Passengers said the plane was on fire and that it was so hot that some of their hair was singed, but they were able to jump out through the plane’s emergency slides. The plane was previously owned by Fynn Air, a commercial airline in Europe, so it had safety features such as exit slides. There were heavy skid marks on the runway which showed that the pilots tried to brake and stop the plane. An aviation expert said aborting a takeoff is one of the most difficult things for a pilot to do during training with flight simulators. Many people are calling it a miracle that all on board survived.
The New York Police Department announced they have arrested a 37-year-old suspect and charged him with criminal mischief for throwing paint on a large statue of George Floyd. The man’s name is Micah Beals. The suspect was seen on videos riding on a skateboard and throwing gray paint onto the statue a few weeks ago. It was the second time the statue was vandalized. The first incident involved several men and so far there have been no arrests of the suspects. The artists behind the statue said they knew that vandalism could happen but that it is the mission of art, to evoke emotion.
