It is Tuesday, November 24. Here are today’s top news and political briefs.
On Monday night, Michigan election officials formally certified Joe Biden’s election win. He was ahead of Trump by over 154,000 votes.
Last night the General Services Administration formally began the transition process for Joe Biden’s presidency. The GSA administrator Emily W. Murphy had delayed the process in the midst of President Donald Trump’s legal challenges against the projected outcome of the 2020 election, but is now opening the door for Biden to take over. A letter she wrote last night said she is making available over $7 million in funds for the transition process.
Today Pennsylvania election officials formally certified Biden’s election victory in the state. Biden had a lead of over 80,000 votes.
Also today Nevada certified that Biden won their state, while North Carolina certified Trump’s victory in their state.
President Trump has not conceded. He retweeted a tweet of a picture of him with the sentence, “I concede NOTHING!!!!!” He also retweeted several tweets from actor Randy Quaid in which he claimed there was a rigged and fraudulent election and encouraged people to stop watching Fox News and tune in to OAN or Newsmax.
Biden gave a video address to formally introduce his national security and foreign policy team.
Today news reports said Biden nominated Janet Yellen to be the Treasury secretary. She used to be a Fed chair, and she would be the first female Treasury secretary if she is confirmed.
U.S. stocks rallied today. The Dow Jones went above 30,000 points for the first time in history.
President Trump gave a one-minute speech at the White House briefing room to say congratulations for the historic 30,000 figure and thanked his administration and the American people. Reporters shouted questions on if Trump would concede, but he ignored them as he walked back inside the White House.

A former San Francisco police officer, Chris Samayoa, was charged with homicide for shooting and killing a Black man, Keita O’Neil, in a 2017 incident. A body camera video showed that the officer fired upon O’Neil from inside of his patrol vehicle as O’Neil was running away. O’Neil was unarmed and was suspected of carjacking a California State Lottery minivan. The officer was charged with voluntary manslaughter and the SF District Attorney said it is the first time that a police officer has been charged with on-duty homicide in the city.
In southeastern Utah, there was a mysterious metal pillar discovered. A video from the Utah Department of Public Safety showed several workers walking on red rock terrain observing a 10-foot metal monolith. The workers were in the area to count bighorn sheep when they found it. State officials said they are almost 100% sure that this is an installation and reminded them that it is illegal to install structures on federally managed public lands, no matter what planet you’re from.
Today Elon Musk surpassed Bill Gates to become the world’s second-richest person. His net worth is about $128 billion. The No. 1 richest man in the world is Jeff Bezos, who has a net worth of $182 billion. NPR explained that most of Musk’s net worth is tied up in Tesla stock.
