Tuesday, November 23 top stories

It is Tuesday, November 23. Here are today’s top stories.

President Biden ordered 50 million barrels of oil to be released from America’s oil reserves with the goal of reducing fuel and energy costs. Gasoline prices in the U.S. are over double the amount it cost at the same time last year. AP News explained that gas prices are unlikely to drop immediately, but we should see a reduction in the next few weeks. AP News also explained that Biden’s decision with the 50 million barrels was done in coordination with China, India, and the U.K. to try and influence global energy prices.

This move is opposed by Saudi Arabia, Russia, and other Gulf nations. The latter countries and the OPEC+ cartel that controls much of the world’s oil supply wants to keep prices high.

Here are three updates with the Capitol riots on January 6.

The second update is that the man who was photographed carrying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s lectern, Adam Johnson from Florida, has pleaded guilty for breaking into the Capitol. He may be jailed for six months but a judge will make the final decision at his sentencing on February 25.

The third update is that the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack have issued new subpoenas for Roger Stone, Alex Jones, and three others who are thought to help organize the “Save America” rally at the White House with President Trump that took place before hundreds marched to the Capitol.

That’s the three updates.

Target announced that it would permanently close its stores on Thanksgiving Day. The store was closed last year on Thanksgiving because of the pandemic, and now Target said they will do this for good. It means that Target is walking away from taking advantage of the Black Friday shopping frenzy. Target said they want to set a new standard so its employees can fully enjoy their holiday with their family and friends without worrying about work.

On Monday night in Los Angeles, a large group of people smashed windows of stores at a mall and stole items before running to their vehicles and driving away. Police officers chased a SUV and arrested three people suspected of burglary. News videos showed sledgehammers left behind at the scene. About $1 million worth of goods were stolen in one night.

ABC News said there were similar smash-and-grab thefts in the San Francisco Bay Area and Beverly Hills over the weekend.

The jury in the Gregory and Travis McMichaels and William Bryan murder trial over the death of Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia started deliberations today after the prosecution and the defense delivered their closing arguments.

The prosecution showed graphic images of Arbery’s body on a street with two large shotgun wounds, one under his armpit and the other near his heart. Images of Travis’ arms being covered with blood was also shown.

The jury must decide whether the McMichaels/Bryan are guilty of killing Arbery based on assumptions they made about Arbery being a criminal or if the group stopped and shot Arbery out of self-defense when there was a struggle as they tried to make a citizen’s arrest. The judge said the jury can reach different verdicts for the different defendants.

That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
