It is Tuesday, November 15. Here are today’s top stories.
Idaho quadruple student homicide
In Moscow, Idaho, law enforcement is investigating the deaths of four college students whose bodies were found in an off-campus home near the University of Idaho. All four were UI students and police said they were killed around 3 or 4 in the morning on Sunday in an “isolated, targeted attack with an edged weapon like a knife.”
The four victims are Ethan Chapin (20), Madison Mogen (21), Xana Kernodle (20), and Kaylee GonCalves (21). Fox News said all four appeared to be friends based on their social media postings.
Police said they believe this could have been a burglary gone wrong or a crime of passion. They said they do not have a suspect in custody but that there is no ongoing threat to the community. Police said it was not a murder-suicide and are looking for a suspect, but did not name any persons of interest. Police said they are trying to recreate the victims’ activities on Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
The University of Idaho president said there can be no words to describe the depth of the suffering they feel. The university canceled classes on Monday.
Disney Plus announces price increases
Disney Plus announced that it would increase the cost of its subscription service from $8 a month to $11 a month. It will still offer an $8 monthly subscription but it will include ads. The $11 tier will not have any ads. The new subscription plan will start on December 8.
Kentucky school bus crash
A school bus with 18 students crashed on Monday morning in eastern Kentucky. All the students and the driver were injured to varying degrees. The bus, for some reason, veered off the road and rolled over a steep embankment. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash. The driver was ejected and partially pinned under the bus. First responders said some students climbed up the embankment and others had to be pulled up with ropes and other rescue equipment. Several students with serious injuries were airlifted or taken by ambulance to hospitals. Hopefully that all who are injured will make a full recovery.

Russian missiles strike Kyiv
The mayor of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, said the city was hit by several Russian missiles. Three residential buildings were impacted and several other missiles were shot down.
The missile strikes are coming after Ukraine’s military recaptured the city of Kherson in the eastern part of the country. The strikes also come after Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s address before the G20 summit in which he said Ukraine should not be expected to make compromises with its territory and independence.
The Biden administration condemned the missile strikes and said they would only cause more concerns among the G20 about the negative impacts of “Putin’s war”.
Arizona governor race: Hobbs defeats Lake
The state of Arizona elected Democrat Katie Hobbs as governor in a very close election with Republican Kari Lake to flip the state from red to blue. Hobbs had about 20,000 more votes over Lake out of about 2.5 million ballots statewide.
Hobbs is Arizona’s current Secretary of State and became nationally known in 2020 and 2021 for defending the results of the 2020 presidential election from accusations of a rigged election. Multiple investigations found no evidence of widespread or coordinated election fraud, burnishing Hobbs’ reputation as a competent leader.
Lake is a strong ally of Donald Trump and shared many of his views.
Lake also disparaged the late Sen. John McCain, calling him a “loser” several times. After Hobbs won the election, Meghan McCain, the daughter of John McCain, tweeted an article that had the headline, “McCain Republicans Vote, Too.”
Governor races results
Here are other notable results of gubernatorial races that I haven’t mentioned in my previous news videos.
In Nevada, Republican Joe Lombardo defeated incumbent Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak to flip the state from blue to red. Lombardo is the sheriff of Clark County, which covers Las Vegas. He became nationally known in 2017 when he led the law enforcement response to the 2017 mass shooting at Mandalay Bay and a country music festival that killed 59 people. Donald Trump endorsed him in April.
In Oregon, Democrat Tina Kotek defeated Republican Christine Drazan. She is the Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives and now will take over the governor’s office.
In Massachusetts, Democrat Maura Healey won with 63% of the vote to flip the state from red to blue. Healey is the current attorney general of Massachusetts.
This is notable: Kotek and Healey are the first two openly lesbian governors in the U.S. So it is a historic moment with two “firsts” happening at the same time.
The first openly gay male governor in the U.S., Democrat Jared Polis of Colorado, won re-election with 58% of the vote.
In Maryland, Democrat Wes Moore won with 62% of the vote to flip the state from red to blue. Moore will become Maryland’s first Black governor. He is an Army veteran and worked as an investment banker, author, and CEO of a large nonprofit organization.
In Georgia, incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp defeated Democrat Stacey Abrams for a second straight time. Kemp got 53% of the vote to Abrams’ 45%. It was a strong showing of support for Kemp because he received a bigger margin of support compared with 2018. Kemp also fended off attacks from Donald Trump who was angry that he did not step in to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
In Texas, Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott defeated Democrat Beto O’Rourke with 55% of the vote. It will be Abbott’s third term as governor.
In Maine, Democratic incumbent Gov. Janet Mills won re-election with 55% of the vote.
In New Mexico, Democratic incumbent Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham won re-election with 51% of the vote.
In New York, Democrat Kathy Hochul won with 53% of the vote to start her first full term as governor after taking over Andrew Cuomo after he resigned.
In Pennsylvania, Democrat Josh Shapiro won with 56% of the vote. Shapiro is the current state attorney general.
In Wisconsin, incumbent Democratic Gov. Tony Evers won re-election with 51% of the vote.
In Kansas, Gov. Laura Kelly (D) defeated Republican Derek Schmidt with 49% of the vote.
Alaska’s gubernatorial election is still at play with only 80% of polling locations reporting results. Incumbent Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy has a comfortable lead with 52% of the vote.
That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
