Tuesday, March 23 top stories

It is Tuesday, March 23. Here are today’s top stories.

A gunman with a AR-style rifle shot and killed 10 people at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado on Monday afternoon.

The suspect’s name is Ahmad Alissa and he is 21 years old. He was arrested and taken to a hospital, and will be booked in a jail today on 10 counts of murder. News videos showed police officers detaining a male who had no shirt or pants, only boxer shorts, and was bleeding from his right leg.

A police officer, Eric Talley (51), was among the dead. He was one of the first officers to respond to an active shooter call at the grocery store, which is named King Soopers. He was a father of seven. There was a 100-vehicle procession to honor Talley last night.

The other nine victims’ ages ranged from 20 to 65. Here are their names and ages.

Denny Strong – 20

Neven Stanasic – 23

Rikki Olds – 25

Tralona Bartkowiak – 49

Teri Leiker – 51

Suzanne Fountain – 59

Kevin Mahoney – 61

Lynn Murray – 62

Jody Waters – 65

One of the victims was the brother of a deaf person. I was able to interview the deaf person and I will post it in a separate video.

Some of the victims were at the store to shop food or to get their Covid-19 vaccines at the pharmacy area.

Witnesses said the gunman was silent when he was shooting and fired his weapon in two-gunshot bursts instead of spraying bullets. It seems like police officers shot him in the leg and were able to detain him. The glass windows outside of the grocery store were shattered.

The brother of Alissa told “The Daily Beast” that he had mental health issues and was bullied in high school. He is an immigrant but has lived most of his life in the U.S. He is from Arvada, a suburb of Denver.

AP News reported that Alissa purchased his rifle less than a week before the shooting.

President Joe Biden gave a statement from the White House about the shooting. He said Congress must act quickly to pass bills that renew a ban on assault rifles and high-capacity magazines and expanded background checks.

At least 14 women have accused Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson of sexual misconduct in multiple civil lawsuits in Harris County that were filed by an attorney named Tony Buzbee. The lawsuits allege Watson sexually harassed massage therapists. Watson has denied he did anything wrong and said he has always treated women with respect. Watson also tweeted that the women’s lawyer tried to demand a six-figure settlement but he quickly rejected it because it’s not about money but clearing his name.

Krispy Kreme announced they would give out free doughnuts to anyone who is able to show a vaccination card for the rest of the year. You have to go to the drive-thru or into a store to get it. The restaurant is also offering everyone, vaccinated people or not, a free doughnut and a medium coffee on Mondays starting next week until May 24.
