Gunmaker to pay $73M to Sandy Hook families

Gun manufacturer Remington Arms reached a $73 million settlement regarding a lawsuit from nine families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in which 20 young children and six adults were murdered by a man using a gun manufactured by Remington. The families said Remington was liable because how it marketed a “military-grade gun to civilians.” The gunman in the massacre used a Remington-made AR-15 style rifle. It is the first time in the U.S. that a gun manufacturer has been held responsible for a mass shooting.

Laundrie died by gunshot wound

An autopsy report of Brian Laundrie confirmed that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His skeletal remains was found in a thickly wooded area at a park in Florida in October. His bones had animal gnaw marks and was under three feet of water for a while. A handgun was found in the area. Also found was a bag with a note in which Laundrie admitted to killing his fiancée, Gabby Petito.

Prince Andrew settles lawsuit

British Prince Andrew has settled a sexual assault lawsuit from Virginia Giuffre, who has accused the prince of using Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking network to encounter and sexually abuse her on three occasions when she was 17 years old. The lawsuit is settled, but it is not known the financial terms. The prince is expected to make a donation to Giuffre’s charity. The prince’s lawyers previously tried to get a judge to dismiss the lawsuit, but it was allowed to proceed to trial. Now the case has been settled.

Putin says some troops pulled back

The Russian military said it is pulling back some of its troops near Ukraine. Russian President Putin said he doesn’t want war and wants to see dialogue with the West about his most sensitive topic — whether Ukraine should be allowed to join NATO. Putin said the status of the remaining troops on the border depends on how the talks proceed.

AP News said an Ukrainian official said they won’t believe what they hear, only what they see. NATO said the same, that they haven’t seen any signs of reduced Russian military presence.

U.S. President Biden plans to issue a statement later today.

Halyna family sues Alec Baldwin, producers

The family of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was fatally shot by actor and producer Alec Baldwin on the set of the film, “Rust,” has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Baldwin and other producers. The family alleged there were “major breaches of industry protocols” that led to Halyna’s death. The shooting happened on October 21 and it is possible that a “live” round was mistakenly put in Baldwin’s prop gun.
