Tuesday, December 28 top stories

It is Tuesday, December 28. Here are today’s top stories.

The CDC announced on Monday that they are shortening the recommended time for isolation from 10 days to 5 days for those infected with Covid-19 if they are asymptomatic. After five days of isolation, the person should wear a mask for 5 days. The CDC said this is based on science demonstrating that the majority of virus transmission occurs early in the course of the illness.

The CDC also said studies from South Africa and the U.K. demonstrate that two doses of an mRNA vaccine only gives people 35% chance of protection from infection, but with a booster dose, it goes up to 75%. This has to do with the omicron strain. The CDC said a vaccine will decrease the risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death.

On Monday, a gunman in Colorado killed four people in a series of shootings in the Denver and Lakewood area. The gunman’s identity hasn’t been released and he is deceased.

Police said the gunman first opened fire at a shopping center, killing two adults and injuring one. The gunman then moved several blocks away and killed a man.

Denver Police were able to locate the gunman’s vehicle and pursued it. There was an exchange of gunfire on the road, but the suspect managed to get away into the Lakewood area, where he shot and killed a man, shot and injured two police officers, and shot and injured a Hyatt hotel employee. The gunman then died of a gunshot wound, but it is not clear whether he killed himself or if he was shot by police.

A witness said the gunman was a tall, blonde man wearing a long coat.

Last Thursday, several police officers responded to a report of an assault inside of a clothing store in Los Angeles. An officer opened fire and killed a suspect in a store aisle in front of the dressing rooms area, but a bullet went through a wall and hit a 14-year-old girl who was in a dressing room. She died. Her name was Valentina Orellana-Peralta. She was putting on dresses for her upcoming quinceañera (a celebration when a girl turns fifteen).

The assault suspect was killed. He was carrying a bike lock and striking people with it in the store. At the time, officers weren’t sure if he had a firearm or not. He didn’t have one with him.

The LAPD chief said he is profoundly sorry for the death of the young girl.

The girl’s family is now represented by prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who said they would demand transparency from the LAPD.

Riot Games, a video game developer best known for its game “League of Legends,” has agreed to pay $100 million to settle a gender discrimination lawsuit. Hundreds of current and former female employees filed a class-action lawsuit that alleged they were discriminated against and faced harassment on a systemic level in hiring, assignments, and promotions. $80 million will go towards the employees, while $20 million will go towards legal fees.

Archaeologists at Cairo University in Egypt have successfully “unwrapped” an ancient Egyptian pharaoh using a CT scan. The mummy’s name was Amenhotep I and he ruled between 1525 to 1504 BC. His body was found at a site about 140 years ago, but archaeologists didn’t want to open his coverings and wrappings because they wanted to preserve it. Now with a CT scan, they can see what Amenhotep looked like. They said he was about 35 when he died, about 5’6 feet tall, and had good teeth. Archaeologists said there’s no obvious signs of how he died about 3,500 years ago.

That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
