Tuesday August 11 top news briefs

It is Tuesday, August 11. Here are today’s top news briefs.

Joe Biden chooses Kamala Harris as VP

Joe Biden announced that she has picked California Senator Kamala Harris to be his Vice-President running mate. She is the first Black woman and the first Asian American person to be on a major party’s presidential ticket. Her mother is an Indian immigrant while her father is a Jamaican immigrant.

Biden made a promise that he would select a female VP during a debate with Bernie Sanders in March. Biden was recently under pressure to select a Black woman after an open letter signed by over 100 Black male leaders, including Sean “Diddy” Combs, said if he failed to select a Black woman, he would alienate the Democrats’ most loyal voting bloc and lose the election.

Sen. Harris was one of the Democratic candidates who ran for the Democratic nomination for the presidency. Before she became a senator in 2017, she was California’s Attorney General.

So, this is a significant shift in the presidential race. Trump and Pence are the incumbents in the White House and now it is known who they will go up against.

Florida reports 276 deaths from Covid-19

Today Florida’s health department reported 276 deaths from Covid-19, which is the highest one-day total for the state. However, the total amount of new cases in the state are declining after spikes in July.

The U.S. still leads the world with 5.1 million Covid-19 cases and 164,000 deaths.

Shooting near White House

On Monday evening at the White House, the Secret Service shot a 51-year-old man a block away from the White House. President Trump was giving a briefing and was taken out of his room and the White House was under a lockdown.  Today the Secret Service explained that the suspect acted as if he had a gun and made it seem like he would shoot at a Secret Service officer, which prompted the officer to shoot. A bullet hit the suspect’s torso and he was taken to a hospital. He ended up not being armed at all. It is not known his condition. President Trump returned to the briefing room and continued with his remarks.

Putin says Russia has Covid-19 vaccine

Russian President Putin announced that his country has developed a coronavirus vaccine and that one of his daughters has received it. Putin claimed that the vaccine was safe and that it has undergone proper testing. Scientists in other countries, including the U.S., have warned against giving out vaccinations without sufficient trials to make sure the vaccine is safe and effective. Russia is moving forward and hopes to start mass vaccination in October.

Big Ten, PAC-12 postpones college football season

The Big Ten Conference voted to postpone all fall sports seasons, including football, because of concerns with coronavirus. They are the first major collegiate conference to postpone. The PAC 12, a conference of Western states, will also postpone their fall sports season. It is very possible that other major conferences, such as the SEC, ACC, and Big 12 will make the same decisions. President Trump is opposed to this, tweeting yesterday “Play College Football!”

800 students and staff told to quarantine in Georgia

800 students and staff at the Cherokee County School District, north of Atlanta, were told to quarantine after they were possibly exposed to a 2nd-grade student who tested positive for the coronavirus. The school district has 19 elementary, middle, and high schools, and has reported 40 cases of Covid-19. This shows the challenge that schools face if they decide to resume in-person classes.
