Tuesday, April 6 top stories

It is Tuesday, April 6. My hand is still doing good. Here are today’s top stories.

Today a 38-year-old Navy sailor, who is on active duty, went to a business in Frederick, Maryland and opened fire, wounding two men. Both were airlifted to a hospital in Baltimore in critical condition. The suspect then drove about four miles to Fort Detrick, where he was stationed, and as soon as he entered a gate of the base, security personnel shot and killed him.

The gunman has been identified as Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet. He is a hospital corpsman.

On Monday night the Texas Rangers packed almost 40,000 fans in their stadium for the home opener. There was a mix of mask-wearers and those who went barefaced. There was a lot of criticism on social media because it is likely that someone will contract Covid-19 and become sick from attending the game.

In related news, the Toronto Blue Jays, who was the opposing team (they won 6-2), are currently playing home games either in Dunedin, Florida or Buffalo, New York because the Canadian government has strict quarantine orders for those crossing the border.

On Day Six of Derek Chauvin’s trial, which was on Monday, the Minneapolis police chief Medaria Arradondo said Chauvin violated the police department’s framework of “sanctity of life,” its principles, and its values.

As you can see, Arradondo said Chauvin’s technique violated department policy.

AP News said Chauvin’s defense attorney has introduced an image of Minneapolis Police department policy that has a picture of an officer with his knee on a handcuffed person’s neck. He will argue that Chauvin was following policy.

Arrasando explained that the neck restraint technique had two areas — either “conscious neck restraint” or “unconscious neck restraint.” The conscious is when an officer puts light pressure on the neck to help control a person without knocking them out. This is allowed only if the suspect is actively resisting. The “unconscious” is a more severe type of restraint that allows officers to use their arms or knees to block the blood flow to a suspect’s brain and render them unconscious. This is only acceptable if the suspect was aggressive or could break free.

Prosecutors have received statements from other police officers who said even if Chauvin followed policy by using his knee, doing that for 9 minutes and 29 seconds did not follow policy.

The second key testimony on Day Six was from Dr. Bradford Wankhede Langenfeld, who was the ER doctor who cared for George Floyd at a hospital. He said Floyd’s heart was not beating and tried for 30 minutes to save his life, but then pronounced him dead. He said the likely reason was a lack of oxygen — asphyxia.

President Joe Biden announced that the new deadline for states to make all American adults eligible for a Covid-19 vaccine is moved up to April 19 from the previous deadline of May 1. Axios explained that 48 states have already met or are scheduled to meet the April 19 deadline, but Hawaii and Oregon will have to make adjustments to meet the deadline.

The White House said the U.S. is administering an average of 3.1 million vaccine shots per day.

The Baylor men’s basketball team defeated Gonzaga last night 86-70 to win the NCAA championship. Baylor is based in Waco, Texas while Gonzaga is based in Spokane, Washington. It is Baylor’s first championship. Gonzaga had an undefeated season up until their loss.
