Troy Kotsur, “CODA,” and “Audible” get Oscar nominations

This morning the list of nominations for this year’s Oscars were announced and four of them were for films with deaf actors or deaf storylines.

Deaf actor Troy Kotsur was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in “CODA.” He is the first deaf male to receive an Oscar nomination and only the second deaf person in history. This nomination is the most prestigious one yet for Kotsur, who has been nominated for multiple best supporting actor awards over the past several months and won a Gotham Award.

“CODA” was nominated for Best Picture. There are ten films up for the award. The film features two other deaf actors, Marlee Matlin and Daniel Durant. It is a return to the Oscar nominations for Matlin, who won the Best Actress award in 1987.

“Audible,” the Netflix documentary featuring the life of Maryland School for the Deaf student Amaree Mckenstry Hall, was nominated for Best Short Documentary. Nyle DiMarco is one of its executive producers.

“CODA” and its director Siân Heder was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. The “CODA” story was based on a French film “La Famille Bélier,” so that’s where the adaption took place, to place it in an American fishing community in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

The Oscars awards ceremony will take place on March 27 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
