Thursday, September 23 top stories

It is Thursday, September 23. Here are today’s top stories.

The FDA announced on Wednesday afternoon that it will grant emergency use authorization for Pfizer’s Covid-19 booster shot for vulnerable people -- those who are 65 and older, people who are at high risk of severe disease, and people who work in environments with a high risk of virus exposure, such as hospital workers or those who work in prisons or grocery stores. CNN explained that the CDC also must approve the booster shots before they can be distributed. The CDC is meeting today.

In Idaho, a bow hunter who was hunting for mountain goats in the Lehmi Range happened to stumble upon the remains of a man who was missing for 53 years. The hunter was trying to take a shortcut to another hunting site when he saw the body.

The missing man was himself also a bow hunter who disappeared in 1968 -- his name was Raymond Jones and he was 39 years old when he went missing.

East Idaho News explained that there was a search for Jones in 1968 with 70 searchers, dogs, and a helicopter, but he was nowhere to be found. The search was called off and at the time, Jones’ family posted an ad in a newspaper to thank people who tried to help out.

Sheriff’s deputies said they were contacted on Friday about the body and when they went to the site of the remains, they found Jones’ wallet with his ID in it. The deputies then contacted Jones’ family members. Jones’ wife is still alive. If Jones was still alive, he would be 92 years old.

A sheriff said it was “pretty wild” how a bowhunter happened upon the remains of another bowhunter from 53 years ago.

The U.S. Special Envoy for Haiti, Daniel Foote, turned in a letter of resignation in a protest against the Biden administration’s decision to deport thousands of Haitian migrants or refugees back to Haiti. Foote said the deportations are “inhumane” and that he refuses to be associated with this process. Foote said the people of Haiti are already going through poverty, suffering under a corrupt government, and a crisis with gangs and kidnappings. He said the island cannot handle the influx of migrants sent from the U.S.

The Biden administration said it is unfortunate that Foote has resigned during a challenging moment and accused him of mischaracterizing the reasons why he is resigning.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said he’s sent hundreds of state-owned vehicles to create a “steel wall” at the southern border to block migrants from crossing the Rio Grande from Mexico. News videos show hundreds of state and military vehicles parked side by side near the river and the international bridge. Abbott said he’s doing this because President Biden is “doing nothing.”

The Weather Channel said it is tracking Tropical Storm Sam in the Atlantic Ocean and forecasting that it will strengthen into a hurricane on Friday. It is currently east of the Leeward Islands and it is too early to see if it will make landfall on the islands or curl northward next week.

Prosecutors in Miami announced they are charging three police officers with felony charges in connection to the violent arrests of two Black men at a hotel in South Beach. There were a total of five officers who were charged with misdemeanors, but now three are upgraded to felonies.

What happened? On July 26 in the early morning at a hotel lobby, a police officer ordered a man named Dalonta Crudup to go to the ground at gunpoint because he was suspected of striking an officer on a scooter. More than ten other offices ran into the lobby and surrounded Crudup. He was handcuffed behind his back and officers were seen kicking him.

A second man, Khalid Vaughn, started filming the arrest using his cellphone. An officer ran at him, tackled him, and punched him several times. Two other officers then struck Vaughn.

There is a video that shows what happened. I have to warn you that it shows violence.

Prosecutors said our entire community has been shocked and offended and that they will bring the charges before a judge next week.

A woman with Down syndrome, Heidi Crowter, lost a court challenge against the British government on a law that allows abortion up until birth of a fetus that has Down syndrome. In the UK, abortions are allowed up to 24 weeks of pregnancy but there is an exception for fetuses diagnosed with Down syndrome. Crowter and her colleagues said this law was discriminatory and violates the European Convention on Human Rights.

Two British judges said evidence shows that although there are families who would still want to have a child with Downs syndrome or other “severe disabilities,” there are many other families who will not react in the same way and may not be able to provide the child with a supportive environment. They allowed the law to remain in place.

An attorney representing Crowter criticized the decision, saying the judges and the law are sending a message that the lives of people with Down syndrome are of lesser value.

That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
